Leftists: "Ve are the most dangerous force in zee political sphere! Kneel before Stalin!" Leftists: "Vy for you blame us for consequences of our flexing our power? Counterrevolutionary lackeys of the rootless cosmopolitans!"

I mean at the end of the day there's a real argument George Bush was a nastily effective campaigner and the only one his sordid little family produced, sure. But that's more Bush being more dangerous than people think and less Gore sucking. Republicans do exist, buddy.

In the real world Gore did fight it for a month, then the SCOTUS did judicial Calvinball for the first term on a partisan basis. I realize y'all don't want to own that Nader made Bush and all his consequences a thing. I wouldn't want to either, but reality is what it is even when you hate it.

The US's most morally impressive victories in the 20th century were without a shadow of a doubt Imperial Japan, Imperial Germany, and the Third Reich (with the USSR at least somewhat being an assisted suicide). For that matter, Ba'athist Iraq is also missing from the list.

People will appeal to say, the Vietnam War as proof of success. If they were willing to die to the tens of thousands every year for 25 years and see everything they had bombed to rubble they too could 'succeed.' But uh, good luck with that.

Depending on how you look at it you can argue this is correct and that Israel's existence was secured by the Great Arab Revolt of 1936-9 gutting their military power right before WWII ultimately supercharged the Yishuv.

Unfortunately true, they may know at best some of the spillover from the Rwandan Genocide but the rest of it? No. And even then the two or three factions not counting Cony's Lord's Resistance Army make things still more convoluted.

"Places other than the US [and sometimes Russia and China] have agency" continues to be something vanishingly few people either in the US or outside of it understand. This isn't how the Cold War worked, it's certainly not how things work now.

Hey look! Let’s shit on democrats for *checks notes* doing the right thing.
The party-line vote was 53 to 47. While the bill adds more constraints on
lawmaker stock trading than what exists under the current law, all Democrats opposed it, saying it did not go far enough to outright end the practice. Democrats also disapproved of the Republican decision to attach changes to voter ID requirements to the legislation.

Eh.....not really, it tells you about a niche group of Jews in Judea. The vast bulk of Jews *outside* Judea, nine in ten of the Jews of that time, had a considerably wider range of views. More than a few Jews of 2,000 years ago spoke and prayed in Greek and couldn't read Hebrew to save their lives.

This is also the Iran-Iraq War. It's why uninformed Americans like making it into a "the US supplied Saddam" morality tale when the actual war was a slugfest between a Soviet client state that got in over its head and the reigning regional power that had just lost all of its arms contracts.

At most the Soviet-Afghan War showcased that it was poorly suited to a protracted war that exposed the perennial weakness of every version of a Russian army at small unit operations requiring flexibility rather than top-down rigidity.

Especially ironic, too, that they tend to focus with a keen navel gaze on Cold War US barbarism in Central America and forgetting the Banana Wars and some of the heavier-handed ironies in WWII, like just *how* the Marines were so good at amphibious operations as they were.

And while it tends towards "Atrocity Olympics" to compare, the numbers here are objectively horrifying. The Shah's security organs killed around 3,000 people during his reign. Pinochet's government, around the same. The Dirty War disappeared 20,000. The Derg meanwhile ended roughly 500,000 lives.

And the irony is that this also leads to understating realities like the forgotten nuclear war flashpoint with the Sino-Soviet border war and the Third Indochina War. Asking people used to black and white morality how to parse the *Third* Indochina War is an extremely interesting case.

Bevins systematically nullifies all of this and pretends that the US had a master plan from 1965 to the 1980s that it carried out, and that rightist governments across the globe were simply puppets dancing to Langley's tune.

Both the US and the USSR were regularly tripped up by the seemingly obvious discovery that allies, or even satellite states, were made of people with minds of their own and the willingness to act upon having them. It's one of the more tragicomic aspects with historical distance.
