Fifteen feet (4.6 meters) away will be three state Corrections Department volunteers with rifles. All three will have live ammunition. They will fire from an opening in a wall the witnesses can't see into.

How does a fring squad execution work?
The specific procedure for execution by firing squad varies across different states, but the general method remains the same, according to Austin Sarat, a professor of law and political science at Amherst College and the author of Gruesome Spectacles: Botched Executions and America's Death Penalty

He explains that traditionally, a person is strapped to a chair, a hood is placed over their head and a target is put on their heart, to highlight where the shooters should aim.

Then, between three and five people with high-powered rifles will fire at the target. In some states, one rifle will be loaded with a blank bullet, so that the shooters do not know who fired the fatal shots. "When the signal is given, they shoot into the heart of the condemned," Sarat says.

In January 1981, police raided her home and found 54 dozen brownies. She was 57. She reportedly greeted the officers with, "I thought you guys were coming." The press nicknamed her "Brownie Mary," and the judge sentenced her to probation and 500 hours of community service.
She did her service in Ward 86 at San Francisco General Hospital, the AIDS ward, at a time when the epidemic was tearing through the city. That's where everything changed. Mary stopped selling brownies and started giving them away to sick patients for free, using donated cannabis and her $650-a-month Social Security check to cover the rest. She called the patients "my kids."" In 1986, Ward 86 named her its Volunteer of the Year.

The arrests kept coming. Police caught her with four dozen brownies on Market Street in 1982, and she was arrested again in 1992, at 69 at a grower's home in Sonoma County. The district attorney there promised to treat her like any other dealer. She faced up to five years in prison and refused to back down. "My kids need this and I'm ready to go to jail for my principles," she said. "If 1 go to jail, I go to jail."

She was cleared.

Instead of slowing down, she became one of the faces of the medical marijuana movement. She helped open the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club, the first medical cannabis dispensary in the country, and campaigned for Proposition 215.

In 1996, California voters passed it, becoming the first state to legalize medical marijuana.

Mary passed away in 1999

Not all opinions are good. It being your opinion doesn’t mean it is above from criticism. By sheer numbers, if we look at the data, the vast majority of abuse victims do not go on to become abusers themselves. This phrase IS harmful, and that has been talked about a lot in victim, advocacy

I was raised by a malignant narcissist who mentally, emotionally, & physically abused me. as of now, in 50+ years, I've never physically hurt anyone, and because I did a butt-load of therapy, only 1 person emotionally. no one sexually. so 🤷‍♀️

I knew someone whose son & DIL adopted some very young brothers who had been abused and was appalled to hear her already expecting the 3 year old to become a sex abuser bc of his own abuse. That's what she saw 1st rather than a traumatized child in need of great love, care, & healing. I was so mad.

My father was beaten by his father, who was a drunk. My father was neither abusive, nor an alcoholic, in spite of that. His abuse taught him what NOT to be. His abuse taught him to be loving and kind. I don’t think that’s some super rare response.

I know of at least two men who were sexually abused as children & feared telling anyone because of the false belief that sexually abused boys become child predatory men. "Hurt people hurt people" is abuse apologism & stigmatizing of victims.

The claim that victims become victimzers is laughably absurd (with no statistical suppprt) because if victims became victimizers, most abusers would be women, disabled or LGBTQ people, marginalized people in general, not cishet men, as they are. It also shames victims into never disclosing abuse.

When people utter that trite phrase, hurt people hurt people, it not only gives abusers a pass, sympathetically excusing their deliberate choices as reactionary pain, it also indicts victims as future abusers. Most victims do not abuse, they remain vulnerable to be abused again.
