Hotel developer seeks size to pay for unknown ‘Pit’ contamination in a suddenly twice-as-troubled Teele Square
An eight-story, 99-room Hilton hotel for Teele Square returned to Somerville’s approval process Wednesday to fill a vacant lot known as “The Pit.” Developers faced questions about how they justified the project’s size, but also a new, easier standard for permitting under state law as they return... Using the authority of the state to curtail the literal right is an authoritarian action. It's also, in a different way, a liberal one, because it guarantees other people aren't silenced. We are simultaneously limiting speech (authoritarian) while protecting other speech (liberal).

We _decided_ we don't have a right to incite violence. That's not in the text of 1A, that's a thing we worked out over many years. And it's an expression of state authority to limit the text of 1A b/c it infringes on others' 1A expression as a result. Like I said: multiple things are true.

How is restricting someone's right to speak, inciting violence, not a curtailing of their right of speech? You're reducing what they're allowed to say. To be clear, I agree that it is more broadly liberal to do so, but it is also a use of authority to reduce an individual's speech. Both are true.

That's my point. But there are times when the rights of an individual must be proscribed for the rights of a larger group. Freedom of speech is one: it cannot be absolute, we should regulate hate speech & incitement of violence. Which is authoritarian, since it curtails individual rights.

A liberal democratic republic needs to choose: * when to be liberal * when to be social * when to be authoritarian such that its residents enjoy the best balance of individual & group rights, to the benefit of society at-large.

Reality shows it is not, in fact, a contradiction. And reality is not a binary. Sometimes, we choose more liberal ways of doing things. Sometimes, more authoritarian. But also: things do not exist purely on the axis of liberal vs. authoritarian. Life is not a binary, it’s a spectrum.

More than 100 years old, the Association of Notre Dame lives along Massachusetts Avenue, sandwiched unassumingly between Eclipse Video and the wine bar Zusammen and beneath a judo club. Society requires a balance of liberal, social, & authoritarian approaches to provide such that everyone benefits. Too liberal & minority groups suffer bigotry b/c of "freedom". Too social, & tradeoffs can't be made. Too authoritarian & better ways of doing are never heard.

A literally liberal gov't is limited to the function of individual rights. But liberalism is expansive & must balance rights of the group w/ the rights of the individual. We cannot wield individual rights if our rights as a group are curtailed.

This month's @motherjones.com cover is astounding. Reposted with alt text:
Cover of the September-October issue of Mother Jones Magazine: a white background with the words "50 years of fearless journalism" in black print, centered above the name/logo of the magazine in large Bright Red. Below that in black, the words "the southern strategy — jim crow was dead and buried. Then came the Roberts court."

And then, framing those words, there are two sets of robes: to the left, the simple black robes of the Judicial Branch of the United States Government, as a Supreme Court Justice might wear; to the right, the white robes and hood of the KKK.

A white person's hand with cuff of business suit and shirt visible, reaches into the scene from the right, poised to grab the Klan robes.

Union Square Main Streets asks for SNAP support
Four out of every 10 neighbors are food insecure, according to the Greater Boston Food Bank — a staggering rate has more than doubled since 2019. I’ve seen this need firsthand while packing fresh food boxes at Food For Free, handing out free fresh food at the CHA Revere Health Center, and at our weekly Come to the Table meal at Connexion Church.

Having top secret components shipped directly to a hostile nation is obviously keystone-kops shit, but everything in these last four paragraphs seem even more damning to me www.politico.com/news/2026/09...
From Politico: A Government Accountability Office report from 2023 found that more than 1 million F-35 spare parts have gone missing in the past five years. The watchdog agency concluded the department hasn’t been able to review spare part losses worth tens of millions of dollars because Lockheed controls the information.

“The F-35 Joint Program Office does not track or enter these spare parts into an accountable property system of record that would enable it to capture and store real-time changes to property records,” the report said. “The prime contractors maintain this information.”

Spare parts shortages mean the fighter jet is often grounded. While sustainment costs have continued to increase, the F-35 has not met performance goals and performance “has trended down,” according to a GAO report from this year.

The program is on track to be the world’s costliest, and the Pentagon expects to spend almost $2 trillion over the course of its lifespan.
