A sweet Gen Alpha kid just came into the horror bookstore looking for the Goosebumps series—her “new obsession.” So I got to be the wise elder with the ancient lore and it ruled.

Book 47 of 2026: EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM WILL SOMEDAY BE DEAD by @emilyraustin.bsky.social. This is a brisk and funny little book that actually made me pretty sad because I have an anxiety disorder and…yeah, Gilda the protagonist. Been there, girl. I wanna give you a hug.
The cover of Emily Austin’s novel EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM WILL SOMEDAY BE DEAD, featuring an illustration of a woman’s torso in a yellow t-shirt and jeans holding a light blue bunny.

Book 46 of 2026: BLOOD IN THE MACHINE by @bcmerchant.bsky.social, narrated by Eric Jason Martin. History repeats itself—but it doesn’t have to. To fight capitalists weaponizing AI against us today, we must learn how the Luddites fought similar tech weaponization during the Industrial Revolution.
The audiobook cover of Brian Merchant’s book BLOOD IN THR MACHINE: THE ORIGINS OF THE REBELLION AGAINST BIG TECH, featuring the title in red, surrounding a red X over an illustration of an old-fashioned worker breaking an old-fashioned machine with a hammer while someone points a gun at him.

YEP. My freshman year of college, my roommate was invited to a frat party. She asked me to come with her—and thank god I did. It wasn’t a party. We were the only women there. We left before anything could happen. Frat bros can go to hell.

Ha ha that’s gross and should make everyone uncomfortable, anyway, Rahm presided over a Chicago police black site, lied about what it was and then I sued the Chicago police for its records that proved it:

Anyone notice an uptick of “cute animal” AI slop and general spam on Bluesky recently? There was always some of it in my Discover feed but lately I feel like it’s every other post. I’ve been muting and unfollowing like crazy.

Book 45 of 2026: IMMACULATE CONCEPTION by Ling Ling Huang. In which near-future technology amplifies the green-eyed monster that claws at the bottom of more close friendships than we’d care to admit.
The cover of Ling Ling Huang’s novel IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, featuring a distorted image of a woman with dark hair.

I can’t stop thinking about the Dracula movie with Caleb Landry-Jones that came out last year. I watched it earlier this week, and nothing about it should have worked. AND YET.
Caleb Landry-Jones in the 2025 Dracula film. His hair is dark and his mouth is covered in blood. He looks like a messed up Renaissance painting (complimentary)

Book 44 of 2026: YESTERYEAR by Caro Claire Burke. Everyone keeps talking about how bonkers the ending is, and maybe the hype is why I didn’t think it was particularly bonkers, given the characters? Enjoyed it overall, though. We love an antihero.
The cover of Caro Claire Burke’s novel YESTERYEAR, featuring a warped image of a rural ranch with mountains in the background.

Book 43 of 2026: ELEUTHERIA by Allegra Hyde. Why aren’t we all talking about this strange little dystopian cli-fi novel from 2022? Hope is crucial to stop climate change—but whose hopes should take precedence? Where should my hopes end and yours begin?
The cover of Allegra Hyde’s novel ELEUTHERIA, featuring an image of an airplane flying over a small Caribbean island, except the plane is cut out of the image, white where its features should be. The title and author’s name, plus a blurb from Rumaan Alam, are printed in orange on a white background.

Pet peeve and/or hot take: I hate it when people shout song requests to bands at concerts. That band has worked hard to write songs and prepare an entertaining set for you! You aren’t entitled to anything! If you want to control art, get off your lazy ass and make your own art!!

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

Book 40 of 2026: SOMEBODY IS WALKING ON YOUR GRAVE by Mariana Enriquez. If her goal was to convince me to visit every single cemetery she writes about in this essay collection, she has succeeded! Not quite as compelling as her fiction, but I generally find nonfiction less compelling than fiction. 🤷‍♀️
The cover of SOMEBODY IS WALKING ON YOUR GRAVE by Mariana Enriquez, featuring a vivid illustration of a pink and blue weeping angel on a tomb surrounded by purple flowers, the title and author’s name above and below in bright orange, all on a lime green background.

Working at a horror bookstore rules. I get to recommend my favorite books to like-minded people. Someone can walk in and say “what’s the most f*cked up thing you’ve ever read?” and I can hand them a copy of Mariana Enriquez’s “Our Share of Night” without worrying about traumatizing them.

Once a year I have to meet with my financial advisor and I always think everyone at the firm seems so fake-nice, so smarmy. But I genuinely think it’s just because I don’t trust people who work in finance. This is a me problem. They have kids and hobbies and stuff, but they also like capitalism.

Book 39 of 2026: ELECTRIC SHAMANS AT THE FESTIVAL OF THE SUN by @monaojedaf.bsky.social. Less of a horror novel than her other books I’ve read, but I still loved it. A musical, psychedelic eruption of love, life, grief, death. Plus, the cover art is everything.
The cover of Mónica Ojeda’s novel ELECTRIC SHAMANS AT THE FESTIVAL OF THE SUN, featuring a trippy illustration of veins of lava traveling upwards in a volcano that erupts in pink waves into an orange-red sky, surrounded by the shapes of white birds and stars

This makes me BIG MAD. Hospice fraud does exist, but ultimately Medicare only covers hospice for people with a 6-month terminal diagnosis (not 3 as he says). After 6 months they have to be rediagnosed or leave hospice. And I think that’s a bad policy because dying takes however long it takes!

remember that (a) most pharmacies will take your word for it if you say you have an underlying condition (if they even ask you) (b) if you do run into someone who actually cares about the restrictions the worst they can do say is no and then you just go to another pharmacy and try again

Book 38 of 2026: DEATH TAKES ME by @criveragarza.bsky.social. I wish people would stop describing this as “a thriller,” because it’s actually a postmodern, deconstructed murder mystery that requires us to examine the gendered limitations of our language. Which is still good! But not a thriller.
The cover of Cristina Rivera Garza’s novel DEATH TAKES ME, featuring a painting of a female figure in a black dress with a white veil over her head, a gust of wind blowing it across her face so that her identity is completely obscured.
