We simply cannot keep doing. We've been doing it since Iran-Contra, & really since 1865. It's the signal feature of American politics. It has to end, or democracy will. bsky.app/profile/mcop...

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

They may hold views that we think are racist, but you can’t write them all off as ignorant white racists either, it’s a relatively diverse group. Many of them are stupid or ignorant, but millions of them also probably understand politics about as well as you do. They want different things than you.

I do think this should put some of the hand-wringing over the uniquely sinful American electorate, uniquely feckless institutions, etc in perspective. The truth is that there is a large trans-national constituency of people who actively want this. They aren’t deceived. They want this.

Exposing Trump's scheme to illegally withhold aid to coerce Ukraine into lying to help Trump's reelection got the aid released. Important point. I don't know how some Dems talked themselves into thinking the best way to counter criminality is to let it slide, rather than investigate and expose it.

The kind of "hallucination" that the tool used by the analyst in this case conjured has not been an isolated incident across the intelligence community since these tools began proliferating across government, according to one of the sources.
For some older intelligence officials - even those who broadly support the use of Al inside the military — Al has put pressure on analysts to produce and disseminate intelligence faster, opening the door for mistakes. Young analysts in particular, several sources said, are natives on these tools and more likely to
trust them uncritically.
"Al allows you to get to a bad idea faster," one of the sources said.

You can have all those things and no collapse, or bad stuff happens that doesn't amount to a full-blown collapse, but those are the general preconditions: long-term structural factors, a series of solvable crises, and people making decisions who shouldn't be in that position. /fin

I've spent a lot of years studying a lot of collapses, and the truth of the matter is that they're always mundane: mild climatic shifts that reduce crop yields, a dumbass in power who makes some terrible decisions, neglecting things that obviously matter but the will to fix them can't be summoned.

Again, bigots will never choose bigotry-lite over the real thing. You're not going to win them but you're going to drive away people who otherwise would have voted for you. And this year -- when voters most of all want "a fighter" in Congress -- running ads about how you will not fight is idiotic.
