I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

"Compared to 12 months ago, would you say that you (and your family) are better off, the same, or worse off financially?"

net better off. 2020- +1. 2021 +6. 2022 -15. 2023 -11. 2024 -6.

The Trump Account is not a proper solution to the childcare crisis. Instead of investing in universal childcare, the GOP is pushing a tax-deferred trust account, benefiting the wealthy while working families struggle with the high cost of living to afford to make such deposits.

Thomas Sowell on homelessness in Intellectuals and Society. This man is a fucking idiot.
Homelessness is another area where much of the media filters what kind of reality gets through to their audience. During his time at CBS News, Bernard Goldberg noticed the difference between what he saw on the street and what was being broadcast on television:

In the 1980s, I started noticing that the homeless people we showed on the news didn’t look very much like the homeless people I was tripping over on the sidewalk.

The ones on the sidewalk, by and large, were winos or drug addicts or schizophrenics. They mumbled crazy things or gave you the evil eye when they put paper coffee cups in your face and “asked” for money. . . .

But the ones we liked to show on television were different. They looked as if they came from your neighborhood and mine. They looked like us. And the message from TV news was that they didn’t just look like us—they were like us! On NBC, Tom Brokaw said that the homeless are “people you know.”

If the homeless tend to be sanitized in television news, businessmen tend to be demonized in movies and television dramas, as another study found:

Outside of a few select goods that may see price hikes, wouldn't the more prominent firms absorb the costs of tariffs within their margins? It was evident during the first trade war when most retailers had absorbed much of the higher import prices by earning lower profit margins.

China needs to obtain dollars before buying treasury bonds, which they do through trading with the issuer of the dollar, the United States. This is how global trade works. Also, as the issuer of dollars, the United States does not need to "borrow" from China to buy its exported goods.

Trump's "reciprocal" tariffs are going to make groceries more expensive. Since 2020, the US has been importing more agricultural commodities than exporting, meaning we are heavily reliant on global trade.
