1. CRISPR came from basic research on bacteria. 2. Optogenetics started with a discovery in algae. 3. The GFP protein comes from jellyfish. The biggest breakthroughs all trace to scientists following their curiosity, and this is one huge reason why we must keep funding basic research!

There have been only 12ish Early-career/Career Development/Discovery Awards funded by @wellcometrust.bsky.social in Ireland since 2020; surely not a significant chunk of Wellcome's budget. This decision has unlikely been a financial one.

Very saddened to learn that @wellcometrust.bsky.social has decided to no longer fund Irish researchers through their discovery grants. This is a major blow for those who do truly blue skies research in Ireland as the ecosystem (i.e. @researchireland.ie) only funds research with perceived "impact"!

Out today, our take on 6-methyladenine #6mA evolution in Eukaryotes @natgenet.nature.com. We asked a simple question, is really DNA 6mA common across the eukaryotes? The answer is "yes" if you're a unicellular eukaryote 🦠, not so if you're multicellular 🐝🌱🍄. www.nature.com/articles/s41... 1/9

Adenine DNA methylation associated with transcriptionally permissive chromatin is widespread across eukaryotes - Nature Genetics

Chaetognaths have lost gene body methylation and shifted #5mC back to Transposable Elements. This reversion to the ancestral state is coupled with a simplification of DNMT3 architecture. We posit that trans-splicing might compensate. It is an honour to have contributed to this 20y struggle ⛰️.
