Why do some goals spread across people and generations, while others emerge only transiently? We argue that human goals are both drivers and products of cultural evolution: our individual pursuits are shaped by our cultural environments, and the goals we pursue in turn reshape those environments.

That actually speaks to a failure mode we identify in the paper. The evaluation of representations is only as good as the set of future goals you test them against. When you use the same representations to generate goals, you can get degeneracy due to circularity. So we need more creative goals

One interpretation: low tonic dopamine dampens the salience of known rewards, so uncertain options win by default. The dopamine hypothesis of drug addiction argues similarly scispace.com/pdf/the-dopa... Caveat: our controls weren't healthy, so we can't claim levodopa fully restores performance

Surprising, since dopamine is often tied to novelty seeking. But this converges with research showing levodopa reduces directed exploration in healthy adults (elifesciences.org/articles/51260) and dopamine transporter inhibition increases novelty preferences in monkeys (doi.org/10.1037/a003...)

Our GP-UCB model decomposes behavior into generalization (λ), uncertainty-directed exploration (β), and softmax temperature for random exploration (τ). PD- showed inflated β and reduced λ, while τ did not differ from controls. However, Levodopa normalized both β and β and λ in the PD+ group
