I went to Geneva a few weeks ago and spoke on a panel about the nature of time for a Geneva Watch Days event. While I was there, on a lark, I entered a competition to most precisely calibrate a Swiss watch. And today I found out that I won! 😃 www.instagram.com/reel/Dd6hUTB...

Paddling (canoeing) across Windermere today, into the teeth of a pretty stiff Force 3 wind - lumpy, and just this side of whitecaps - I came across a swimming squirrel, looking very stressed. Not a planned swim, I'm guessing. It was 300m to either shore, so I'm not sure s/he was going to be okay.

There's something darkly fascinating about the idea of a technological revolution that is a net drag on efficiency. It upends a lot of what we think futurology should be. But you can see a sort of inexorable logic to it...

The whole point of humans as a sociable, tribal species is we should eject people like this, so they starve in the wilderness alone. There are consequences to sociopathic behaviour. Somehow the abstract idea of money has short circuited our basic evolutionary safeguards.

Wide shot of the BRITISH MUSEUM. There are suggestions of fascism around the streets - tanks, barricades, an Orwellian 'Big Brother'-style poster on a wall. A voice of a TOUR GUIDE emanates from the museum:

TOUR GUIDE:
So the Tapestry tells acrucial chapter of our nation's history...

2
[Cut to interior of museum. A long Bayeaux-style TAPESTRY is on display, and the Tour Guide is speaking to a tour group]

TOUR GUIDE [smiling]:
How modern fascist Britain was created.

3
TOUR GUIDE:
The Tapestry begins here with the 2008 Crash, then austerity, then the AI Crash...

4
TOUR GUIDE:
...and by the end of the room it's just full-on fash.

5
CHILD IN TOUR GROUP [gesturing to the tapestry]:
What's this middle bit?

TOUR GUIDE:
This is the 2026 Battle of Legitimate Concerns

6
TOUR GUIDE:
[show a reporter standing next to the Dover protests]
Here's the media saying the government have got to do something about the legitimate concerns...

7
CHILD:
...About the failure of capitalism?

TOUR GUIDE:
No about brown people on boats

8
CHILD:
[pointing at boats crossing the sea on the tapestry]
Are these boats the mega-dinghies?

TOUR GUIDE:
Not all of them

9
[we see one of the boats is a giant yacht]
TOUR GUIDE:
That one's a superyacht,
carrying money from the American fascists to the British ones.

10
TOUR GUIDE:
You see really it's as much a story of convergence as it is of conflict.

[An alarm sounds in the museum]
DING DING DING DING

11
TOUR GUIDE:
Ok, tour over everyone

12
TOUR GUIDE:
It's time for the Two Minute Hate!

[They all leave the museum]

[ends]

The image is of a four panel comic.
The first panel shows a brain. The brain is saying "I'm 30 and YOUNG! I only recently fully developed!"
The second panel shows a heart. The heart says "I hear ya! I can keep going for DECADES more!"
The third panel shows a spine's face. It weakly says, "I am old".
We zoom out and the spine is using a walker. It continues, "so very old".

The irony here is that this is a guy assiduously marketing himself as a Proper Writer by making up a fairy story about everyone else who gets published having to be an Oxbridge Londoner who has relatives in the media and 1m insta followers
I have a horse in this race, so you don't have to believe me. But I ended up self publishing because despite 2 Sunday Times bestsellers I couldn't get arrested by a publisher.
When I tried, this was the response (I'm not joking)... 1/4
1: Are you prepared to do 100% of your own marketing, at your own expense?
2: Will you move to London?
3: Do you have any famous relatives in the media?
4: Which university did you attend?
5: How many Instagram followers do you have? 2/4

•••(You'll note I do item 1 anyway. Sorry.)
But publishers don't want writers. They want packages. They want somebody who dazzles on TikTok, rubs shoulders with the London set, and can pull strings to get a spot on BBC Front Row. Without any marketing spend.
Those are marketeers, not writers.

I repeat here that it was very obvious in the 2000s and 2010s that the Israeli public were being aggressively prepped for The Day Of Vengeance, when men of will would Do What Must Be Done, and our politicians and media outlets unified to scream filthy abuse at everyone who warned this was bad.

You do not need perfect Irish. You do not need to remember every irregular verb. You only need somewhere to begin. 💚 Molly Nic Céile called into Chapters with Gaeilge inár Saol, her warm, practical guide to making Irish part of everyday life - I love this idea, even though my Irish is rubbish.
Molly Nic Céile stands in bright sunshine outside the glass frontage of Chapters Bookstore, holding her green-covered book, Gaeilge inár Saol: Irish in Our Lives. She wears a dark blue denim dress and black high-top trainers. The Chapters sign and a large poster for Sebastian Barry’s The Newer World are visible behind her.Molly Nic Céile stands inside Chapters Bookstore holding a copy of her green-covered book, Gaeilge inár Saol: Irish in Our Lives.
