One of my favorite Seattle sunsets I can remember was viewed from the Greenwood Fred Meyer parking lot. It’s always a parking lot.

Another morning of dense fog and low visibility across Western WA, specifically in the #Seattle metro area. Visibility as low as 1/8 mile at SeaTac Airport! #wawx

I love spooky October mornings.
Foggy look out my front window. Trees disappear into the fog.

Yeah I think it would help people clamor less for more if we adopted richer non-tech heavy curriculum for the general population.

Ah that's where I'm remembering the light study from. I watched them present!

I don't know! When I was in G&T there wasn't much in elementary, it mostly started in middle. Then there was not just acceleration but depth, and I definitely would love to see more depth.

I think it could go either way. It could actually make people think they are safer than schools without. They are going to survey kids so I wonder if that will be part of the survey, perception of safety. And I guess we'll see what happens to enrollment.

There's a WHOLE light study about how the lights will not increase light pollution beyond the edge of the field because they are special lights that are specially angled or somesuch. It sounded like they were thoughtful about it.

Other student member talking about how easy her experience has been at football games. Repeats, "What's the harm?" So many students at SPS have had encountered gun violence.

Rankin says her Hale student didn't like that it was a reality today. Asking about interaction with law enforcement, when things confiscated, not escalated to law enforcement. Doesn't think should have to do an initiative to tell BOS to do job, but sees the value. Widow's Bay reference.

Rankin: Curious to know about timeline, what will tell us if the pilot has been successful. BOS: Going to survey students, look at timing getting into the school, does lateness increase, other delays. Run through a quarter/semester, do analysis.

Mengelsen (student member) talking about power of hearing from students and community at the last board meeting. She also brought up at student advisory board, have them think about want at their schools.

Lavallee did safety walk along Henderson with council member and community. Question from community member: "Is this going to take years just like everything else we do?" hahaha/

BOS is talking about listening to communities of school, if there's something we can do to make kids safer, we should at least try. Now he's talking about other parts of the security puzzle in addition to the weapons detector. Mizrahi is right, probably could do this anyway, but signal to community.
110
Beth Day @thebethocracy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
MIzrahi is introducing, this is not required by policy but show of support by board.

Beth Day @thebethocracy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Okay this was just introduction so I kind of zoned out expecting a vote. Here's the next item: Approval of Resolution No. 2026/27-08 Supporting the Superintendent’s Implementation of School Safety Measures (at Rainier Beach and Nathan Hale HS)

BOS: HCC is a legal requirement, if we're going to do it lets do it well. Will expand likely who qualifies. Once we start seeing who is qualifying, might look at how to change service model. Montgomery and HC department re-evaluating a lot right now.
200
Beth Day @thebethocracy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Rankin: annoyed we're here now, should have gone this way in 2017. Lots of different kinds of intelligence. HCC oriented towards academic high acheivers. Recognize more ways of being HCC not just doing well on MAP?
310
Beth Day @thebethocracy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Montgomery: WAKIDS and MAP was used. Multiple ways to qualify by NGAT (?), MAP high score. Other places combine data. Not doing that this year. No longer using DIBELS.
100
Beth Day @thebethocracy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Rankin: Will this replace DIBELS as an identifier? DIBELS not used right in this context. Also MAP used before, measures acheivement.
000
Beth Day @thebethocracy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Montgomery: talking about the history of changes to make HCC identification more equitable. Identifies potential. Old process focused on academics, early achievement. New test will identify more kids.
100
Beth Day @thebethocracy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
BOS talking about advantages of Naglieri, able to identify kids earlier regardless of exposure to early childhood ed. More equitable. Now Paula Montgomery talking.

Beth Day @thebethocracy.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Approval to Implement the Naglieri General Ability Tests (NGAT) as a Grade 1 Universal Highly Capable Screening Assessment is the next item.

Alki ES needs a fence. Kids have left the property and had to be looked for. Outsiders have access to playground. There was a luring incident. New fence at the entrance. Fence only 3 ft high. Need to secure the perimeter. Need to coordinate with Parks, but a tragedy would be worse.
