‘Brighton are the world’s most forward-thinking club’: Jason McCarthy on retiring at 29 to coach
Former Wycombe defender thought he might end up becoming a pastor but stayed in the game he loves “You blow your whistle and then, all of a sudden, voom, you have 20, 30 people standing to attention,” says Jason McCarthy, discussing his transition into coaching after retiring from playing aged 29. He put on his first sessions while a defender at Wycombe, taking the club foundation’s under-16s. “I was so flustered. I learned very quickly: if I’m going to do this in front of men – hopefully, eventually – then I need to practise.” He accepted the role of Brighton’s under-21s assistant at the start of last year and recently returned to the role after two months in interim charge this summer, while the head coach, Shannon Ruth, supported Fabian Hürzeler’s first-team staff. McCarthy has huge admiration for Hürzeler, Brighton’s impressive 33-year-old head coach who at 31 became the youngest permanent manager in Premier League history and was part of his interview process. you’ve given your peace prize to a rapist who has bombed a participating country, whose players weren’t allowed to stay overnight in the host nation, who also banned entry to a perfectly legitimate (black) referee and you changed the rules because the rapist told you to but yeah best World Cup ever.

The bigger picture: Tuchel gets blame for England exit but this is not only about him | Barney Ronay
German will be pilloried for his semi-final decisions but that is to ignore the fact English football culture is not set up to win major tournaments “I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly.” As England’s World Cup hopes recede into another spell of heartache, let down in Atlanta by the latest handsome, cadaverous Mr Right, a little sadder, not much wiser, sunburnt, broke, eating Jägerbomb ice cream out of the tub with a spoon, this is a good moment to seek some classic New York romcom solace. Meg Ryan was right. Don’t be sad that it’s over. Be incredibly angry and frustrated on the radio that it happened at all. Continue reading...

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

If Arsenal have made most of their resources, is this as good as it gets? | Jonathan Liew
Thirst for renewal is strong and new players could help bridge the gap to PSG but there are no guarantees The greatest lie ever told about penalty shootouts is that they are a lottery. This is a recognisable and trainable footballing skill, a test not just of ball-striking and placement but research, psychology, mettle under pressure. Eberechi Eze puts the ball wide, Gabriel Magalhães sends it in the direction of the Danube: this is failure on the most brutal and unforgiving terms. But it is failure nonetheless. The second greatest lie ever told about penalties is that fortune plays no part. Any encounter decided by 10 kicks of a football will evidently be at the disproportionate mercy of random factors: the divot, the bad contact, the goalkeeper’s guesswork (and to all the preparation that goes into the process, it remains partly guesswork). That this sport – already a sport of low scores, narrow differentials and infinite variables – chooses to decide its biggest prizes on these smallest of morsels is one of its cruellest traits. Guardiola ready to benefit as fellow Cruyff disciple Arteta strays from the path
Manchester City and Arsenal managers were both schooled in the expansive Barça tradition but the latter opting for caution could be his team’s undoing When Pep Guardiola was preparing for the challenge of taking on Jürgen Klopp’s peak Liverpool team at Anfield in February 2021, training that week at Manchester City was a little different, according to Oleksandr Zinchenko. Guardiola’s instructions seemed counterintuitive. “Guys, let’s start from the goal-kick, I want you to make at least three or four touches on the ball,” the manager told them. “Most of the teams come to Anfield and shit themselves. They want to play one touch, two touch. ‘Oh, don’t give me the ball! Oh you take it!’ But you have to play with big balls at Anfield! Big balls! ‘Give me the ball!’ Demand it! If you need to dribble past two or three players, do it. But play football. I want you to play football.” Zinchenko recalls that Guardiola made the same speech before they walked out at Anfield. “Teams coming here are scared. They play one or two touches, and that’s what Liverpool like, because they get the ball back so quickly. I want you to be brave. Play your football!” as Zinchenko puts it in his autobiography, Believe. Admittedly that game came in the midst of City’s record-breaking 21-game winning run that season but was also Guardiola’s first win at Anfield, so not dissimilar to the title showdown at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday with Arsenal. Roberto De Zerbi targets ‘Ange-ball’ revival to save Spurs from relegation
* De Zerbi wants to replicate former manager’s style * ‘I want to see the Spurs I watched with Postecoglou’ Roberto De Zerbi intends to bring back “Ange-ball” as he attempts to prevent Tottenham’s first relegation in 49 years. De Zerbi has only seven games in which to impart his complex football philosophy to his players and wants to replicate the rampant, marauding style of the former manager Ange Postecoglou, who won Tottenham’s first trophy in 17 years but was dismissed after finishing 17th in the Premier League last season.
