What the streamers and VOD services have done is revolutionary. And the investment in money and talent is keeping the industry alive right now. But nobody has actually replaced what curated linear TV does. And I’m not sure they can ever do that, or should want to.

The whole menu / on demand system reveals itself to be astonishing at some things, and very poor at others. There are loads of things a streamer should never even try to make, as the menu system will vanish it completely. VOD needs to exist in parallel with linear TV for a healthy TV culture.

Everyday objects are the real archaeological treasures! Birch bark is perfect for making containers and wrapping. This 7,500-year-old wrapping was X-rayed, but unfortunately, it didn't show anything. It probably held something perishable. From the Mesolithic settlement of Motala/Sweden. 🧵1/2 📷me

Really enjoyed Digger. Doctor Strangelove meets Birdman with a sprinkling of Wes Anderson. Can also understand why other people might not enjoy mannered, high-concept satire. If you do, however, it's well worth your time. You might love it. I almost did.

Not sure it's faint. I liked it more than I like Strangelove. I think Inarritu has a better understanding of what's funny than Kubrick did. I think it's ambitious and exciting film-making.

Since the Hormuz crisis, EU gas prices are up 132% and oil 52%. Electricity is up 44%, after falling through spring. Every boiler, car and furnace that switches to electricity is less exposed to the energy crisis. Electrification is increasingly energy security.

It is really important to understand that anyone trying to claim this is a "technological transition" is either deeply misguided or trying to sell you something. What this is, is a deliberate act of harm being done by people with names and addresses.

What is happening is not that AI-generated cultural goods are replacing human-made cultural goods; what is happening is that capital is flowing out of the production of cultural goods *entirely,* making us all poorer for it.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

I don't know what you're going to do, England. In Northern Ireland, they let the fascists riot for a bit and then threaten to take their government funding away and they stop for a year or so. England seem to be taking the same policing approach but with no off switch. Not good.

I think it's absolutely mad that today there's a *national news story* about 400 oil platform workers losing their jobs, and the government being blamed. 25% of the UK TV industry lost their jobs in the last 4 years and we never hear a peep about it! Some jobs are 'real jobs' I guess.

One of Magdalen's most legendary figures, Martin Routh was born #OnThisDay in 1755. He served as our President for 63 years, between 1791–1854. This daguerreotype of Routh was taken on his 99th birthday on 18 September 1854, making him one of the earliest born people to be photographed.

I worked in a factory with a part-time lifeboatman once. His beeper would go off every now and then and he'd drop whatever he was doing and RUN out to his car. No-one would say a word, we'd just work around him, what with the guy being an actual real life hero and everything.
