To me, this episode is one of the most revealing insights into Trump's psychology. He's in a self-made bind over fuel prices, and needs a fix before the midterms. The only solution he come come up with involves a massive favour from other countries, but his approach is still 100% threat-based.

Before people learned music with 'do re mi', the sequence once began with 'ut' as the lowest note. The absolute lowest note recognised in medieval music was 'Γ ut', with the Greek letter gamma, and 'Γ ut' came to refer to the full range of possible notes. This is behind the phrase 'run the gamut'.

A salutary tale in How It Happens - institutions actively grant fascism the power it craves before it really holds that power. It happened last time, it happened this time and it will happen next time, whenever and wherever that is. In the meantime, let’s hope the US escapes before it’s too late.

Challenges will no doubt emerge. This announcement will stoke debate about free speech and the right level of government intervention – and genuine free-speech concerns will also be instrumentalised and amplified by the same inauthentic or malign networks that the new agency seeks to combat.

"I"
From the Guardian:
Trump threatens to 'annihilate' Iran and 'drive them into Hell' if regime doesn't cave

After sharing his version of the Iran war, Trump issued a threat to “annihilate” Iran and “drive them into Hell” if the regime didn’t capitulate and make a deal.”

“Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before?” Trump said, describing the choice he said was before him. “Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?”

Trump then hedged by saying he was confident Iran would make a deal after the US midterm elections – an argument he’s made to US voters.

I have deep respect for Jason Statham's work and honesty. Jason knows what his audience wants, and delivers it – and precisely it – time and again with no pretence of offering anything else. Complaining about a Statham movie is like complaining about bananas. If you don't like them, don't eat them.

Here’s a poem about one of my cat’s poems. It’s called “On ‘,,,;;pppppp’[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’”.
On ‘,,,;;pppppp’[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’

Upon returning to my desk,
having left it temporarily in search of biscuits,
I discovered my cat had written
another poem on my laptop.

It was called ‘,,,;;pppppp’[[[[[[[[[[[[;’;////////////////////////3,’
and while it constituted one of her more difficult pieces,
it was also the kind of poem
which rewarded repeat reading.

I was struck by its experimental structure,
the absence of line breaks;
indeed, not one single space
between any of the poem’s 10,000 or so characters.
One of the work’s central motifs –
‘jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk’ –
was, by turns, reassuring and unsettling,
while the symbolism of ‘###################’,

hinted at our 21st century preoccupation with social media.
And yes, there were perhaps a few elements
which did not work: twelve whole pages
containing just the number 7 seemed a little excessive,

while her introduction of the character T
was not altogether convincing. But who could not be moved
by that devastating final line, its message of hope
piercing our hearts like an arrow: 333333333333333,,,

When governments become livid and starts making threats over what they describe as "ineffective" and "purely symbolic" action, you have to wonder whether it's because those governments have severe anger management issues or because the action is not in fact "ineffective" and "purely symbolic".
