Poetry publishers will tell you 99% of sales occur within three months of a collection's launch. That's why I'm stunned to find that sales of Whatever You Do, Just Don't have gone through the roof this year, all thanks to Bluesky. Drop me a DM and I'll sort out your signed copy for you...

No way I can compete with the major poetry publishers who get collections stocked by bricks-and-mortar bookshops But I do have word of mouth and all you wonderful people here on Bluesky, pushing the numbers of readers of Whatever You Do, Just Don't far beyond the sales of the big boys. Thank you!

In collecting Poems for Katie, it was astonishing to see how much the poems knew before I did. I was sad for so long, deeply but so quietly even I couldn't hear it. This one became the cover image.
The Giant Who Had No Heart Inside His Body
by Timothy Green

after Asbjørnsen and Moe

didn’t know where to hide it. It was a big heart, after all,
as huge as a Cadillac, as loud as a kick drum, and where
do you hide such a thing? He tried the barn, wrapped

in layers of aluminum foil and linen, hung on a hook
from the highest beam—but still the field mice found it.
He woke that night to the tickle of their tiny feet inside

the huge hollow of his chest. His own laughter chased
him through the darkness until he lifted the barn roof
and scared them off. Next, he tried the bottom of the lake,

sunk with stones to the deepest part. The surface rippled
softly with every beat of the mighty heart, but the sound
was muffled and the fish well-fed. For a while, it worked—

until the cellophane began to leak, and the hole inside him
filled with water, a well overflowing, and he wept for days.
When the hungry princess arrived, it was raining. He noticed

her bright umbrella. Eat, he said, having no other choice, his voice
rolling down from the clouds. And so she ate, slice by slice,
bite by painful bite for a year, until no one anymore might find it.

Super late posting but grateful to the lovely folks at Ocean State Review for publishing “The Fifth Swan,” a poem which also appears in MORE FLOWERS (Trio House Press)! Really happy to be alongside some friends in this issue, too! 🦢🌸 @triohousepress.org
Image of the front cover of the Ocean State Review against a backdrop of greenery and pink and red flowers. Susan L. Leary

The Fifth Swan

Is the image that provided a set of subsequent images for me to avoid: rain collected in a metal pail. Birdsong at midnight.
An illusion of cars that carry wind. I say, I am no different, that I left my girlhood bleeding at the back door & ignored her letters. Promised to replicate her as image, then made her sound. Listen-anywhere you look, the highway is fifty yards away, which means we are abandoned by the present as fast as we are abandoned by myth: despite snow, the sun throbs & the lakes devour themselves whole. Thinking myself smart, I google images of bedrooms erected in the forest
& capitalize only the important words to make them real.
I left
my Girlhood bleeding at the back door & ignored her letters.
Girlhood, Girl, Rendezvous, Sleep. Recall, it was not cars but furniture, in the old days, that was made well. My heart, a piece of furniture with loose threads & a broken leg, so I whittle
a table & chair from neither image nor sound but the mind— & if through the mind, the concept of death can be reinvented, the fifth swan is no longer dead, the lake is teeming & snow glues itself to the ground: the back door swung open.
The only
question, who is more distrusting: you or the world? The rain or the pail. The birds or the sky. For the sake of the swans, I give
up, though the soul must sit down to make amends.
