Thrilled to have this poem in dialogue with Elizabeth Bishop in the new, 50th anniversary issue of @rhinopoetry.bsky.social!
The Shampoo
after Elizabeth Bishop

Not even the end
of January 2025,
and you're already

on your knees, hair
cut for the first time
since holidays with

your parents. You
always grow it out
for them, the South,

rural gas stations.
But now, it's shorn
again, short as you

like it, flanneled
shoulders flecked
with half-moons.

Time is amenable
once again, so you
bend over the tub's

lip as I wash these
black ringlets shot
through with stars.Cover of RHINO poetry journal. A photo of black driftwood on tan sand, enhanced with a white brush stroke
