Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

found out that one of the hudson river school painters -- frederic edwin church -- painted what is probably one of the best depictions of a meteor precession because he saw it from his yard in 1860. this is the same thing that Walt Whitman wrote "Year of Meteors, 1859-1860" about, probably.

my car makes a weird noise once and suddenly I'm out hundreds of dollars just to have the thing looked at. on the other hand, I could toss my bike out a second story window and it'd probably still be safe to ride to the repair shop and only like $30 to get fixed up.

estimates for the mass of pluto over time from the discovery of neptune (1841) to the discovery of its frosty surface and icy atmosphere (late 70s), fit with the stupidest function I have ever seen (a cosine raised to the power pi)

related to my earlier post about older papers, I've been looking a nature or science commentary piece from sometime shortly after 1975 where the authors as a joke plot up mass estimates for Pluto from 1930 onwards and conclude it'll disappear by the mid-80s: if this rings a bell, lemme know

I'm already a huge sucker for older astronomy papers and plots, but getting a chance to update our department's cosmology class has me really off the deep end. the early 70s are a real treasure-trove of people writing stuff like "we're the smartest ever: we told the computer about the error bars"

Aug 10th 1988 - Zero Cool was in the New York Times for crashing 1,507 computer systems. 📽️📅 Hackers (1995)
3 Screenshots from the movie "Hackers" (1995): First, a young man in a sleeveless shirt sits in a cluttered room, saying "I've got a record. I was Zero Cool." Second, a group of friends gather around a table, one explaining "Zero Cool crashed 1,507 systems in one day. Biggest crash in history." Third, the same group listens as another person adds, "Front page New York Times, August 10, 1988."
