Institutionalizing people doesn’t make them “better”. It doesn’t help them and it’s not compassionate. It simply disappears them. Hides them away so the general public don’t have to face disability and mental illness. People think it’s better because they don’t have to see it.

For all the bad it does, social media allowed people to see that what's happening on their block isn't the entire world. It allowed us to connect with people who helped us flourish in ways this society simply does not permit when things are functioning as normal. It was and still is a lifeline.
