The skirmish on the banks of the Willamette River is another reminder that our cities have become the stepchildren of a state government that continues to claim the lion’s share of revenues from economic growth, columnist Tim Nesbitt writes. buff.ly/RLj32tg

Recovery from disasters takes years & often loses focus from those in power as new problems crop up. People understand the response phase. Recovery is different beast. In Oregon we created state Individual and Public Assistance programs, but we’ve yet to fund them. That’s what I’m working on now.

Admittedly a risk I hadn’t considered. Naively I assumed that our contractual rights to our data would suffice. But if the vendor just goes belly up and takes your data offline, what’s the remedy? Especially worrisome in the era of digital evidence that is stored in a vendor-owned cloud.

When Portland renumbered the city in the 1930’s the city paid for everyone to get new address tiles to mount to your house. It’s an iconic “old Portland” thing. Several companies sell replacements and even new construction homes sometimes put the “old tiles” on. everetthomesnw.com/construction...

This is wildly unethical. It’s just experimenting on kids to line the pockets of grifters. I cannot conceive of my child’s school doing this and would be livid that they’d outsourced screening for a learning disability on reading to a machine.

I will die on the hill that govtech sucks because of a lack of state capacity and an IT environment captured by vendors. This is doubly true at the state and municipal level. If Mamdani can build 18F at a city level, we should all be watching and thinking about how to do this in our states.

So, I hope this isn’t the conclusion we get to with AI. (Nothing against Dr. Hess, I just hope he’s wrong). Asynchronous online courses are the only way I was able to do grad school and work full time. If we give up on that modality, we’re eliminating a ton of students from higher ed.

Two things can be simultaneously true: local govt needs to continue to find technological innovations as resources shrink - and we do not usually have sufficient internal capacity to evaluate technology before investment. Also, we’re not always great at red teaming our own ideas and seeing risks.

IV. CONCLUSION
An anonymous government is no government at all. It cannot be held accountable. A
masked agent freely uses force without justifying his actions, and the public cannot name him to
challenge his conduct.
A regime of secret policing has no place in our society. Here, the Government’s power is
derived by the People, and the People must be able to identify the Government when it acts to
infringe on their liberty. Masks obscure government action and deprive the public of its Fourth
Amendment protections.
