Oh, believe me I know. It’s just another example of how we’ve hollowed out our state capacity and have to spend more taxpayer money as a result.

NEW: The head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has issued a statement firmly condemning plans to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan. Archbishop Paul Coakley calls the decision “a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered.” www.usccb.org/news/2026/us...

WASHINGTON - Yesterday, the U.S.
Department of War announced that the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the man convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009, would be publicly livestreamed. Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the following statement sharply condemning the decision of the U.S. government:
"It is with shock and great sorrow that I have learned of the Department of War's decision to publicly livestream the execution of Nidal Hassan. Our God is the God of life. In no way can Hassan's actions be condoned but this decision is a barbaric promotion of a culture of death and must be reconsidered. The word of God exhorts us: 'do not repay anyone evil for evil' (Romans 12:17). The public execution even of one who has done grave harm will only further undermine the moral fabric of our nation and be a blight on the conscience of its people.United States

Capital punishment is wrong, but the United States government creating a sensationalized snuff film is a moral abomination that we all should repudiate. On no level is this acceptable conduct from a nation that holds itself out to the world as a force for good. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/08/u...

If carried out, the public execution of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad set for Dec. 3 would be the first in modern U.S. history.

The Jail by John Irwin is a really good, if dated, sociological study of what incarceration does to people. Obviously jail not prison, but I think it’s a useful comparison. Irwin was an inmate himself and that informs his perspective.

There’s no way DOD gets an extra $500B to plus up the budget. The literal entire rest of the non-defense discretionary budget is like $780B. It’s manifest insanity to think this would be possible.

Our 5 is more fun than I anticipated. Some quirks that I don’t love (no physical buttons for the climate control is a little aggravating - and why is there no good place to stow sunglasses?) but overall it’s zippy and great.

Nicks Boots has a line of dressier shoes that are built like boots, so basically indestructible. I have the Riverfronts, which I use as my dress shoe, but they’re soo comfortable. You can get them in basically any width. Downside is the wait time and cost. nicksboots.com/collections/...

Truly, Truman is really the example of the everyman President. Didn’t have a college degree, bounced around odd jobs, worked super hard, failed, tried again, and finally hit his stride in his 40’s. We’ve done so much worse for national leaders, even for all his faults.

Recovery from disasters takes years & often loses focus from those in power as new problems crop up. People understand the response phase. Recovery is different beast. In Oregon we created state Individual and Public Assistance programs, but we’ve yet to fund them. That’s what I’m working on now.

I’m here for this discussion, especially as someone who did an MPA mid-career as a mid-manager in an operational department. I’d have loved a different track with more finance / budget, operations and less leadership / management. We did have a program evaluation certificate option which was good.

Admittedly I am on the “less screens is better” side of things, but I feel like a lot of the nuance will be parsed out of studies like this and the message will just be “see screen time makes you smarter” and then people throw iPads at toddlers more than they do now.

Axon hosts the evidence but it’s in the Azure or AWS Gov clouds. So…how do I ensure access in the event of one of them collapsing. Especially for stuff like homicide evidence that I legally have to keep *forever* That’s a new nightmare to contemplate.

Admittedly a risk I hadn’t considered. Naively I assumed that our contractual rights to our data would suffice. But if the vendor just goes belly up and takes your data offline, what’s the remedy? Especially worrisome in the era of digital evidence that is stored in a vendor-owned cloud.
