A timely article in this issue, explores growing student and parent anxieties about the relevance of choosing History in an AI-driven future. It credits historical thinking in "cultivating an instinct to slow down, reflect, verify" and scrutinise claims. This mindset is invaluable for the future.

Had a great time at #SHP2026, which included @profdanhicks.bsky.social's brilliant lecture, building on his latest work, which traces today's "culture wars" back to late 19th century 'militarist realism', making the case for the fall of monuments as a necessary process of historical reckoning.

Gorgeous weather today for our y8 visit to the National Maritime Museum. One student concluded they don't like visiting museums because they would rather the objects were in their original context. Not sure where they've got such ideas from👀

This is terrifying and all too real. The right wing think tank nexus that brought us hard Brexit has moved on and is now seriously pushing for policies and propaganda backing the wholsale ethnic cleansing of Britain. We've never seen anything like this. bylinetimes.com/2026/06/18/r...

I would love for the social media ban to instead focus on limiting children's use of AI. That's what's really killing children's brain cells and wasting my time!

Really enjoyed this brilliant novella. It does an excellent job of humanising the women behind the witch trials by creating a dialogue across time between Geillis Duncan and an ethereal modern visitor. Will be recommending to my A-Level students studying the North Berwick witch trials.

We’re thrilled that @profdanhicks.bsky.social will be a keynote speaker at the SHP Summer Conference this year (July 10-12, Leeds Trinity University). His books The Brutish Museums & Every Monument Will Fall challenge us to think critically about empire, museums, & the stories we choose to preserve.

Just wrote up my interview with Trần Nam who was 6 years old in 1968 and saw his entire family killed at My Lai. Only those who were 10 or older at the time of the massacre are formally considered as survivors, since younger children are not presumed to remember much. But he remembers everything.

Every time I hear men talk about destroying this planet so they can travel to a dead one, I think about how miraculous the existence of Earth is, and how capitalists should never be permitted to make decisions about space exploration.

As if extortionate visa fees and in many cases outright rejections weren't enough, now they want a "tourist fee" for the descendants of the very people these museums plundered!

Current reading:the discussion about citizenship seems particularly relevant-'legal' categories like 'citizen', 'subject', 'refugee' are part of an imperial framework that still rely on imperial institutions to define terms of inclusion. Unlearning means dismantling the systems that produce them.

Tayyiba Nasir @tayyibanasir.bsky.social · 27/03/2026
There isn’t a visa category for 'fleeing danger' so restricting legal routes just pushes people towards even more dangerous 'illegal' routes. But wait, I forgot the real purpose is fear-mongering, not actually providing solutions...

I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.

Maybe it’s because I’m a colonial historian but so many of these white nation states seem to behave exactly like they did in the 19th century: ‘your leaders aren’t right for you,’ ‘we’re only killing you/colonizing you/installing puppet leaders for your own good’

I'm deeply confused by this take - even if the attack was legal, we should still condemn it. There was a time when slavery was legal and that does not affect how we view it. But (il)legality is too often conflated with (im)morality, which is also why the language of 'war crimes' is so unhelpful.

no, it simply isnt. People are talking about capital using gAI as an excuse to conduct mass lay-offs, about students losing learning because theyre being lied to about gAI in education, about the mass theft of the work of artists and authors to train LLMs, about CSAM and nonconsensual sexual images.
