A tale of black history, fashion history, and malicious compliance. Its an old comic I made about the tignon law.

In 1700's New Orleans, some black women were able to buy themselves out of slavery and dressed elegantly.

They wore elaborate hairdos and caught the attention of non-black men.

The 1786 TIgnon Law meant to force black women to wear headwraps to associate them with the slave class, worried that they would be on par with white women otherwise.

Black women had to comply, but made it into a fashion statement: wearing elaborate, colourful headwraps with ribbons and jewels.

Tignon became a symbol of pride, black women continued to wear them even after the law was lifted.
