When I felt like my administration had my back, it was frightening sometimes, yeah, but I knew I wasn’t likely to be fired for someone getting shirty with me. The failed COVID response stripped that away, and suddenly it was on us to deescalate, educate, defend ourselves but not fight back.

My buddy managed a Walmart. Someone literally bit one of his employees in the face on Black Friday, and he says that wasn’t even the most dangerous thing that happened that day. If all you’re doing is working at home or with clients or coworkers, I don’t think you’re getting the full picture.

—both are more and more aggressive. By the time long COVID forced me out of the library in 2022, threats were an everyday occurrence, and triaging them was getting harder. My colleagues who remain describe feeling jumpy and distrustful on the job, which isn’t healthy for them or patrons.
