It will be very interesting to see whether the Tories' new (and belated) appeals to the self-interest of their natural voters in Tory/Lib Dem seats - via the £100k childcare policy and the new IHT announcement - will bear fruit. If they move the polls tangibly, the Lib Dems' strategy is bust.

Andy Burnham told by Lib Dems to reveal all meetings with owners of Manchester City
* Burnham also urged to declare City stadium hospitality * PM said he would be concerned if owners forced to sell Andy Burnham is facing calls from the Liberal Democrats to publish details of all his meetings with Manchester City’s owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG), and declare all hospitality he has accepted at the Etihad Stadium. The prime minister was widely criticised this week for saying he would be “really concerned” if ADUG were forced to sell City after being found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial regulations, which led to Downing Street issuing two clarifications of his position on Thursday. Recent lobbyist for Palantir had key role in helping Andy Burnham become PM
Exclusive: Martha Dalton worked closely with Burnham’s team on byelection that secured his return to parliament A recent lobbyist for the controversial $450bn US tech company Palantir played a senior role in helping Andy Burnham become prime minister, it has emerged. Martha Dalton, whose company Lodestone worked for Palantir in 2024 and 2025, campaigned for Burnham in the Makerfield byelection that secured his return to parliament. She worked closely with his team on strategic communications and rebuttals, and was among supporters who clapped him into Downing Street in July. Continue reading...

I love October and find it a very moving, transitional month, full of time for consideration and a slower pace of life; but also one of alive-ness. Today this poem by Patrick Kavanagh is on my mind. A stunning sort-of sonnet that he wrote after successful treatment for lung cancer, in 1955.
October

O leafy yellowness you create for me
A world that was and now is poised above time,
I do not need to puzzle out Eternity
As I walk this arboreal street on the edge of a town.
The breeze, too, even the temperature
And pattern of movement, is precisely the same
As broke my heart for youth passing. Now I am sure
Of something. Something will be mine wherever I am.
I want to throw myself on the public street without caring
For anything but the prayering that the earth offers.
It is October over all my life and the light is staring
As it caught me once in a plantation by the fox coverts.
A man is ploughing ground for winter wheat
And my nineteen years weigh heavily on my feet.

Patrick Kavanagh, Come Dance with Kitty Stobling and Other Poems (1960).

I think Burnham is fortunate that he said this in the same week he said so much other stuff that is giving him positive headlines, because this is a very ill-judged intervention for a Prime Minister. He should never have even entertained the question. He can't blur lines like this.

The Renters Rights Act introduces a form of rent control. The pricing stabilisation within it stops landlords from unreasonable above-market increases. One unintended consequence may be to remind landlords to increase rents annually, when many didn't before if they had good tenants.

This stuff is going to infuriate me for the next few years, isn't it. The Greater Manchester mayoral elections do not run on a proportional system. Burnham was elected twice on the supplementary vote system, which does *the opposite* of encouraging voters to reveal their genuine preferences.
BBC reporting: "Burnham says the proportional system he was elected under in Manchester "led to better politics" as it forced politicians to reach out to voters who may not have backed their party."

And how will it do that? Healey, it turns out, has the kind of idea of work you’d expect from a man who has been active in politics since 1986. There were a lot of references to the coalmining heritage of his constituency, and even the more modern work he talked about was hard, manly toil like pipe-fitting, the sort of thing that involves bulging forearms and mucky overalls. Aside from his wife, the one woman he mentioned was Reeves, and she’s just lost her job.

It’s far from clear that the Chancellor has a handle on what the more modern bits of the economy look like. There are a million young people out of work, he said, and the solution he pointed to was shipbuilding apprenticeships. Do this year’s unemployed graduates actually want to go into shipbuilding? Are there enough ships for them to build? His first job, he said, was washing glasses at a pub, exactly the kind of work that has disappeared in the face of minimum wage and tax rises.
