Things I have seen people doing on their phones today on planes: - Listen to multiple eps of Candace Owens podcast - Have an X account that seemingly only follows John Cleese and Piers Corbyn - Watch an hour of bare-knuckle fighting on TikTok

Cork ✈️ Frankfurt ✈️ Yerevan. First time in that part of the world. Exciting stuff. But first, 7hrs of flights and 2x3hr layovers plus a 3.15am arrival. 🥱

One thing that Reform are doing, which makes them look more and more like any other old group of politicians, is using the same forms of "technically true, but really not" form of attack.

Because we are rural types with kids, we now (to our genuine and eternal shame) have two cars, one diesel, one electric. Somehow, over time, the 2011 diesel people carrier became "my car", so here's my GoFundMe link:

So, massively speculating, but it sounds as if they were waiting and watching, but a farmer coming home from a party called in the local plod, who jumped into something they weren't meant to be aware of. Quite Slow Horsey.

I know Dutch politics is a bit mad, but yesterday their Labour Party formally merged with their Green/Left party under a shared "Progressive" banner. Maybe Ireland could learn a thing or two from that?

The Tories are doing a big push on the idea of benefits being paid as vouchers not cash, which perfectly hits the modern politics trifecta of being expensive, ineffective and popular.

Can't really predict persuasive effect of seeing lots more right/far right material on a constituency where 75% of people voted for progressive parties in 2024. But if R+R combined do substantially better than the 6% Reform got in 2024, they'll feel vindicated in campaigning so much.

Last week we were talking about Reform's high ad spending, but look at that Green line go vertical thanks to their attempt to try and win Holborn and St Pancras for Zack Polanski. Full ad spend report for all UK advertisers, as always, here: trends.whotargets.me/reports/7e7c...

Honestly, this feels like a marketing stunt by the producers, feigning ignorance about the need for very basic verification to run social issues ads on Meta to get a "censored" story.

I thought this was really good, though a bit narrowly focused on the information warfare side of things (likely to tie into the government announcement earlier in the week). I hope the book deeply explores what it would mean if millions of people got 10-20hrs a week back from their phones.

This American Life this week has a story on kids using Spotify podcast comments (for NPR shows) as chatrooms to avoid age verification. Spotify should immediately be fined 6% of global turnover for the clear failure of safety-by-design.

The thing that happened here happened, but the reasons are considerably more complex than "Meta censors these things", and the article falls a long way short of explaining the complex, multi-year chain of events that starts with fears of "another Cambridge Analytica". bsky.app/profile/work...

The piece doesn't go into it, but the reason this ad was "banned" (stopped from running due to a policy violation) was as much to do with EU regulation of political advertising and the way that clashes with Meta's systems as anything else. www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

The pipeline of "campaigning" > "content creation" > "targeted ads with specific audiences" is something we'll see a lot more of over the coming years. It's been common for organic content, but relatively rare for paid.

The ad is only targeted at the constituency, so Lowe's high reach organic posts on Facebook are doing most of the heavy lifting in terms of pushing this narrative.

The real criminal violence and intimidation is one thing, but the continuous and intentional performed threat of violence feels like a really huge problem, because it's right on the line between "free speech" and "politics by other means".

As you'd expect, Gordon Brown's call for donation caps is well-argued and evidenced, but there's a factual error at the start. The "new forms of political advertising" that helped the Tories win in 2015 didn't really exist until a few years later. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

It's always so dispiriting to see 2,000+ comments under Facebook posts about Sadiq Khan. News orgs should really have a special policy for him, because although him getting a peerage was newsworthy, his swearing in is not, and them knowingly juicing their numbers thanks to racist froth is awful.
