Jack Gallant on what makes a useful theory: "-Theorists should focus on formulating specific predictions that discriminate their preferred theories from highly-correlated competing theories." Representation of the world in the human brain www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFwH...
Jack Gallant (UC Berkeley)
https://simons.berkeley.edu/talks/jac...
Topics in Intelligence: World Models and Social Reasoning
Suggestions for researchers working on this problem

Theorists should focus on formulating specific predictions that discriminate their preferred theories from highly-correlated competing theories. In practice this is likely to be extremely difficult in the context of the natural world.
Given the indirect relationship between implemented neural circuits, measurements of those circuits, and computational theories, theorists should work closely with experimentalists to establish valid cross-scale translations and linking theories.
Experimentalists seeking to test some specific theory should always pit multiple competing models against one another. Merely showing that one model accounts for a significant part of the variance is a common strategy, but it is not sufficient.
The very fundamental differences between the architecture of the brain versus the architecture of ANNs or LLMs should be taken into account when comparing results across these two different systems
