Just clicked that beta = ((X’X)^-1)X’y is the same as beta = Cov(X, Y)/Var(X). (Yes I know this is obvious but my mind does this sometimes).

Pointing out the absurdity of these ludicrous, clearly self-defeating planning enormities is good praxis actually.

More seriously, there needs to be a feedback loop between what you're doing and organisational value. If that feedback loop is crisp enough, what are you reviewing code for? Get another AI to do it.

It is actually interesting to see a real life early modern Mecantalist monarch, to see someone who actually just sincerely believes that worldview. Bit odd that he graduated from one of the most prestigious business schools in the world tbh.

I'm glad Andy Burnham is going to put petrol prices on Google Maps, because it will be another great entry in the fascinating literature on petrol station tacit price collusion.

642 MW being output from Dogger Bank A today, the highest level it has output at to date. Good to see that number finally going up. Looking forward to the day we see it hit the full 1,200 MW!

Once again thinking back to how this is the entire thesis that David Graeber came up with for Bullshit Jobs, which should have really been subtitled "Administrators at the London School of Economics who really annoy me".

The British parliament only “worked” when it was just understood that local councils handled domestic stuff and local representation was a meaningless formality.

Tom James @tacj.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I think ditching the “local link”, meaning MPs become full time legislators/ministers rather than turbo social workers for their constituency would help a lot in improving MPs’ working conditions. It might even improve the quality of legislation!

This way voters would have clarity on what parties would do in office, and what kinds of coalition governing programmes are likely. It would also increase the salience of policy issues over personalities.
000
Tom James @tacj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
A solution to this would be to replace manifestos by spreadsheets, where parties would detail clearly their position on any given issue, and if a party proposes something, all other parties have to indicate if they would support this or reject it in coalition negotiations.

Tom James @tacj.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
One of the defences of FPTP is that it gives a clear endorsement to a particular manifesto, whereas in contrast PR leads to coalitions where the governing programme is negotiated by politicians.

Different nations of the UK have different policies but - starting with Welsh-based politicians - MPs with young children will begin losing their free nursery hours from 2028 onwards when their salaries hit £100k. So, yknow, this might suddenly become a policy of mysterious cross-party appeal.

The really bad thing about these changes is they don’t engage with the real reason for self-employment and subcontracting - tax. There are no employers NI contributions on self employed sub contractors! Painting this as about rights misses why it’s good for both sides!

The ur sin of this Labour Party is that it’s got so polarised against the Tories that it didn’t really comprehend that the Tories and Boris Johnson in particular governed like a Labour government. Tax rises on the rich, liberalised immigration, higher spending on welfare (pensions) and the NHS.
