Disturbing 🧵 I work in DC, but it's part of my job that I don't speak to journalists; I prep people who do. One of the things that I've noticed is a significant deterioration in basic standards of practice, including respecting off the record communication and porting quotes from other contexts.

This is a fantastic essay using @milhistlee.bsky.social's book on The Cutting Off Way (of war) in Native North America to think about how warfare is changing today. I think you can actually push the analogy even further though, toward overall strategic aims.

Like this is the shape of the signature you're looking for: something that surges dramatically during the pandemic but then stays pegged since. So many things people put forth as explanations fail a simple time series correlation test: they either start too early or recede post-pandemic.

Since we’re doing another round of “AI will destroy humanity” doom-hype, it’s a good time to announce a new paper myself and my postdoc advisor just had accepted by BioSocieties on just this. TL;DR: almost all the “AI can make bioweapons” literature comes ultimately from the Effective Altruists.

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.
A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:

Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase

Don't be left behind

The media's lack of object permanence is insulting. Here's an example: "financial woes" -> Trump won't allocate funding. Board -> Trump appointees. The headline is minutiae. The Center is closing because he is closing it (because he can't rename it)
