Importantly, the kinds of development that don't need to be notified are ones that are within the existing planning controls. This is curtain-twitchers getting mad when somebody wants to do something entirely within the rules, and they can't try and work the refs to stop it

Hard to square the assertion that people won’t complain about gentle density with how much mayors are whinging about removing their ability to reject such density. This one from Ryde.

Not undertaking further consultation is the right call. Consulting on every tiny change (especially when it's in lone with demands of those already consulted) just makes society worse. It's part of how we got into the housing mess we're in!

Residents get some of what they want, still aren't happy... What would even be the point of more consultation? They would continue to say that its too tall and they still hate it. Meanwhile, it would mean further delays www.smh.com.au/property/new...

Is this really bringing any value to society. Or does it just provide a shopping list of excuses for NIMBY councils to say no to more housing for people?

We would currently have a lot more art deco flats in Woollahra Council if not for 100 years of tradition of upholding bans explicitly initiated to keep the poors out. The street in Rose Bay mentioned at the end recently got declared a mid-rise zone by Minns under the LMR. 🎉

This is a shopping list of Australian housing myths, including my favourite, ‘there used to be housing commissions’. Yes, and the absence of public housing is a real factor in crisis. But the Cwth and State housing commissions built a tiny fraction of our cities, the vast majority was private built

Mid-rise apartments in Drummoyne are now approved in Land & Environment Court. Interesting part of the Judgment: if the state has said your street is mid-rise under the LMR, that’s now the desired future character. Council whingers in a shambles.

Do NIMBYs have good faith objections to density that could be accommodated? Works in Progress has published several suggestions for minimising opposition. But @resnikoff.bsky.social argues that NIMBYs are unreasonable; so compromise won’t work. 1/2

Guy who has never been to New York City or the San Francisco Bay Area: rich people would NEVER move into modest homes built for the middle class.
Strong Towns screenshot: The household purchasing a luxury condominium was never going to occupy a 500-square-foot starter home. Building that starter home does not require waiting for anything to filter down. It creates the missing product directly.

Heritage listing entire suburbs, especially right next to the CBD is incompatible with the aim of housing affordability. The Woollahra plan is a start, but there's plenty of other areas where old buildings are prioritised over people who need housing. www.smh.com.au/national/nsw...

Unless the building is of truly extraordinary merit and/or the building itself is closely tied to important historic events, I am a strong believer in the “lay a plaque and keep it moving” method of marking historical places.

We might not pay for it directly, but we pay for it in higher housing costs, time wasted, and people forced to move away to cheaper housing. It's clear that plenty of people want to live in the inner areas of our amazing city. They should be able to - it'll be even better that way!

Sydney YIMBY sees the impacts of excessive heritage protection on our city. It means people are forced to live hours away from friends and family. Hours wasted commuting every week. All because a few people have decided their vision of our city is the only one allowed!

Any given specific NIMBY argument—about infrastructure capacity, or home values, or aesthetics—is nearly always just a shell game masking generalized opposition to anything changing, and which is why it's a waste of time to engage with NIMBYs on details.

And it's not just economic opportunities. Our cities are great places to live, but are being held back by the insane cost of housing, especially here in Sydney. The solution to the high cost of housing is to build more housing, of all kinds.

There are 2 positions on housing. YIMBYs believe we should build enough housing for everyone. NIMBYs believe we should only build housing for people who *really deserve it* and that they should get to pick and choose who gets to live in their neighborhood.
