Time for Woollahra to share. Sydney YIMBY Committee Member Dom Behrens in tomorrow's SMH, bringing much needed facts to a discussion desperately in need of it

Hard to square the assertion that people won’t complain about gentle density with how much mayors are whinging about removing their ability to reject such density. This one from Ryde.

We would currently have a lot more art deco flats in Woollahra Council if not for 100 years of tradition of upholding bans explicitly initiated to keep the poors out. The street in Rose Bay mentioned at the end recently got declared a mid-rise zone by Minns under the LMR. 🎉

She’s talking about plans to build new apartments in the richest area in the country. Good on the Guardian giving a voice to the poor downtrodden residents of ... checks notes ... Woollahra.

Mid-rise apartments in Drummoyne are now approved in Land & Environment Court. Interesting part of the Judgment: if the state has said your street is mid-rise under the LMR, that’s now the desired future character. Council whingers in a shambles.

The absolute audacity of Woollahra council putting #housingcrisis on their facebook post trying to prevent rezoning in their LGA! A signal that they're actually fighting on the side of the housing crisis?

Absolutely loving this row of 4 terraces from the NSW pattern book in Cronulla shared by one of our members. What was a single house can soon be home to 4 households! And since it's pattern book, they're basically plug and play.

While some in the eastern suburbs scream bloody murder over 9800 homes in Woollahra, there’s 13,000 homes on exhibition in Westmead South and barely a peep. Rich areas think they should be able to opt out, we think everywhere should help out Submission guide for Westmead below

New report from the Aus Public Policy Institute finds that Heritage Conservation Areas constrain housing supply and says there needs to be more accountability for their impacts. We strongly agree! Full report linked below

It's pretty hard not to be impressed with the NSW Government’s plan for Woollahra station. High density around both Woollahra and Edgecliff stations, new local centre leading down to Woollahra station, and a high quality public domain plan.

People want to live in cities, because that's where the economic opportunities are. But our wealthy inner city councils are making life a lot harder than it should be. This is why Sydney YIMBY continues to advocate for more housing where people actually want to live www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...

Fantastic news. Housing forms that have already been consulted on in detail when the area gets upzoned should not be subject to a further drawn out process by the local vetocracy whose only goal is delay. Endless consultation processes only get in the way of housing we desperately need.

Two years ago we were photographed by the AFR in front of these really pedestrian homes in a heritage conservation area in Roseville. They subsequently got upzoned in Ku-ring-gai’s masterplan… and now there’s a DA for 130 homes at 9 storeys on this site.

Last week Sydney YIMBY was at Willoughby council speaking against a proposed new heritage conservation area. This week, Mayor Tanya Taylor has moved a motion to look at how we can make it easier to develop in heritage conservation areas. This passed after 45 mins of debate. A positive step!

Amazing that people move to the CBD then complain about noise. State government should tell these people to get lost, instead they’re scrapping plans for a 24 hour cultural venue at Barangaroo.
The proposal quickly drew objections from residents of high-rise towers and community groups in Barangaroo and Millers Point. Concern centred on the cumulative impacts of late-night events, particularly noise, crowd control and disruption to residential amenity.

Anne Crabb, president of the Millers Point Community Resident Action Group, said the scale and design of the venue heightened those fears.

This is what winning looks like.
Nearly half (48 per cent) of people either strongly or tended to support increased residential density in their own neighbourhood, up from 46 per cent last year and 44 per cent in 2024. About 17 per cent of people were strongly opposed to the idea, while 18 per cent were ambivalent.

Matt Levinson, the committee’s head of corporate affairs, said: “We’ve seen [support for increased density in people’s own suburbs] gradually moving up year on year, and the number of people who oppose it gradually declining. Two-thirds of the city now see it as OK in their own neighbourhood.

We’re going to fall well short of our housing accord target and DPHI is responding by watering down their reforms to the consistency of skim milk. People are sleeping in their cars and they’re handwringing over whether four storey apartments are “discordant” with $3m terraces adjacent to the CBD.

In a pattern we’re seeing across Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs, Bondi Public’s student numbers are going down so much they’re leaving classrooms empty and teachers are losing their jobs. Isn’t planning supposed to match homes to infrastructure? Is Waverley Council asleep at the wheel?

Inner West Council just had their refusal of a Petersham boarding house overturned in court in a 50pg judgment. The thrust of their argument is that 19 people should be denied a home because some internal trusses on a non-heritage property would no longer be visible.

Incredible final sign off from Michael Koziol. It’s easy to forget that two years ago the conversation on housing was very different. The ability of journos to see through the facile arguments of planners and heritage advocates has been instrumental in that change. www.smh.com.au/national/nsw...
