This is all hands on deck! Pneumatic plague is airborne and nearly always fatal if untreated. Wiped out 150 million, half of Europe, way back when. Treatable with antibiotics, but we don't have enough antibiotics. Also from a lab in Russia, where they still have weaponized plague. Total nightmare.

Keller says that we need to stop "shooting ourselves in the foot". I agree. A great start would be if national newspaper columnists stopped trading in revisionist histories and lazy arguments and actually took the challenge -- and opportunity -- of a decarbonizing global economy more seriously.

One major glitch in this piece: Carbon pricing is a conservative policy especially when revenue neutral as it uses the market to reward behaviour. It was George Schultz, a Republican, who championed it (supported by Brian Mulroney). I spent a lot of time discussing it with both.

Put another way, Ford wants to spend more on removing bike lanes in Toronto ($48M) than he's spent protecting all of Ontario's businesses from an international trade war. Ontario deserves serious leadership, that follows through on promises, and actually puts people before profits.

I was wondering how the work of Jane Philpott was going. Although unsurprising, this is very disappointing.
In response, the Ontario government allocated $2.1 billion to build interprofessional health teams. Yet the Ford government is undermining its own strategy: Teams are forced to offer salaries far below those of public hospitals to the essential staff required to run them. Worse, the province is funding private clinics that compete for this already scarce workforce. The Ford government is sabotaging its own plans.

Iris Gorfinkel: How Doug Ford’s health plan costs taxpayers billions — and privatization is making it fail
To save universal health care, Ontario must reverse its path. Funding private clinics drains our public system, poaching staff and siphoning taxpayer dollars from front-line care.

I noticed that OLP candidate Lee Fairclough makes Ottawa part of her platform (appreciated). She's also a pretty cool person, having represented Canada at the Women’s World Cup of Rugby and been President of St. Mary's General Hospital. I wouldn't be disappointed if she wins the leadership race.

Given what I've seen on SM, I'm surprised by the results of this recent poll: (from bruce728.substack.com/p/3-out-of-4...)
Poll results of Canadians from Spark that show the following:
79% agree that “as long as government continues to own infrastructure, leasing out the operation of it makes a lot of sense.”
· 78% agree that “allowing pension funds to invest in existing infrastructure is a good way to raise money that could be spent on new infrastructure.”
· 78% agree that “government can protect the national or public interest just as well through regulation as through direct operation.”
76% agree that “infrastructure would be operated more efficiently if done by a pension fund or other investor that has experience operating infrastructure”

It should be obvious, but talks about adapting to climate change or colonizing another planet often ignore that humans (and animals/plants that we love and love to eat) evolved to live on Earth in the climate we have today, and we built our infrastructure for today's climate. Everything else sucks.
