This is one of the most terrifying interviews I’ve ever seen. The slow reveal of the mental landscape at work here. If you don’t end up thinking we should stop these people with as much force as we can muster, I’d be very surprised. youtu.be/lnLDjXy2kRA?...

Glad I woke up with a headache this morning - it made me look at my phone earlier than usual and realise that we hadn't put the bins out. Bins now safely out. Headache still here.

Argh. I want to start working on my next non-fiction book and thought, y'know, I need to do the research in Welsh, rather than in English and translate. But I can't find a damn thing about half the animals I want to research because the Welsh web is horribly underdeveloped.

When I was a teen, my Dad was working on an OU degree, which involved a module on moths. He made a moth trap and we caught, IDs and recorded lots of moths. They were fabulous! Some of them are so pretty.

Thank you! That's very kind of you to say. Moths sounds interesting, that's a good idea. I do like a nice moth, though I don't know much about them. Or what moths might be in Brompton Cemetery. Definitely worth a think though!

Did that walk with @levparikian.bsky.social too: fieldworkpodcast.substack.com/p/why-brompt... I absolutely love Merlin. It occasionally doesn't hear anything when I can very clearly hear a bird, but it's good at high-pitched calls, which are the frequencies humans lose first.

I'd much rather they fixed social care, tbh. I have very little sympathy for rich people wanting to ensure their kids are a bit richer. Fixing social care would be a massive vote-winner, too, but obviously is a thornier problem without a clear soundbite. 🙄

We've not yet turned on the heating, which is good, but I have had to break out the SAD lamp today.

Suw @suw.bsky.social · 21h
Yup. It's a "fix the thing people are shouting loudest about" approach, and who gets to shout louder than anyone else? Rich people.

Suw @suw.bsky.social · 21h
Like, we all see how this system keeps rich families rich and ensures that poor families never get to pass on even the slightest bit of wealth if they lose the disability/dementia lottery, yes?
130
Suw @suw.bsky.social · 21h
OK, so let me get this clear: Rich people with lots of assets to pass on to their kids are going to be able to pass on even more. But poorer elderly people who need social care have to sell their house and hand over all their assets, and their children inherit nothing? How the fuck is this fair?

Corporate support for women in STEM has shrunk & we're nowhere near equity. How we get back on track is the question at the heart of my new report, but I need your help to finish it off. Please donate or share! www.gofundme.com/f/help-me-finish-m…

As I understand it, it wasn't the ladies who put the pants on the naked man, but the person (a bloke) who created the reference images for them. Clearly wished to spare them their blushes, though I'm sure they would not have cared one jot. Particularly Mabel.

just turned down BBC London radio and telly because there's no fee. I don't particularly need the fifty quid or whatever it is, but it irks me no end that so many programmes rely on external expertise, usually from freelances, for no fee. Exposure ain't going to pay the mortgage.

Oh, we were the same. It was so, so good through the first couple of seasons. Tom Mison was brilliant, but it just went all the way to shit in the final season. I think we got two or three episodes into S4 before giving up completely. Have never had the urge to go back and finish it off.

Can I also add that the ‘thinning of the veil’ stuff is modern bullshit invented in the 70s and not a single ancient Celt would recognise that as a thing they believed.

“It is highly unusual that an end-product threatens the economic foundations of its essential suppliers, but that is the situation we have created for our LLM business with respect to its ‘content supply chain.'” Yes. Because the usual thing is to PAY YOUR ESSENTIAL SUPPLIERS, NOT STEAL FROM THEM.

Yep, this has been a glaring flaw from the start, but the tech industry appears to blithely assume there will always be Content because there has always been Content in the past.

I know I've said this before, but when I was 5 we were forced to watch a farm safety film called Apaches, and it was fucking terrifying. Traumatised me for months, if not longer. I wouldn't walk on grass for a very long time afterwards. It's on YouTube if you want to see the horror of it.
