This story is all kinds of awful, like any death penalty case, but having critical-care doctors working hard to restore her to full health so it's then going to be OK for the state to try to kill her again is... whatever's beyond Kafkaesque. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Corporate support for women in STEM has shrunk & we're nowhere near equity. How we get back on track is the question at the heart of my new report, but I need your help to finish it off. Please donate or share! www.gofundme.com/f/help-me-finish-m…

All a bit pathetic. If a political party can't keep thugs out then it's not fit for any form of power.

So we should let people continue to purchase over powered and unsafe e bikes because of motorists. The whole 'cyclists are less likely to kill you, so they should be left alone' argument is moronic.

More theories every day about how to distinguish LLM writing. This may seem weird coming from a massive LLM cynic, but you kinda can't? Sure, there are hints, but they will never be conclusive - the information density of text is too low. The "space" of possible texts is not actually that large.

Feels like Badenoch gets a free pass as noone wants to accept that the leader of one of our two main parties is completely Dagenham*, despite one of her predecessors tanking the economy in a week and the other being "royal mint NFT" guy. There is no safeguard on the role, they'll let an idiot do it.

@octopus.energy Seems to be a bug with the latest android app version - at the same time as the usage graphs changed to a green colour scheme, it's stopped showing new electricity usage. No data for about two days now; gas shows still and live consumption for electricity working though.

You absolutely can be "hard-working" if you're relying on the state pension: there are plenty of people still working after pensionable age. And that's not counting grandparents stepping up to look after children, or pensioners caring for their unwell partner etc.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Probably not the first one to notice this, but the rise of the beasts transformers film has the two smallest members of the party go into a lava filled mountain while the rest of the party stage a suicidal distraction. That's got to be deliberate, right?

I know this is about a particular image. But AI models do this for everything and don't make clear to users that the output is essentially noise generated by training data.

Talk of re-industrialisation in certain sectors like defence is good, but making it the key pillar of your overall economic strategy when services make up 80% of GDP feels like a mistake.

This is *very good*. The main reason, IMO, people overestimate genAI is how "believable" the output is at first glance for the reasons here: statistical extrapolation produces an *amazing* level of verisimilitude.
