The N.B. column in the latest TLS @thetls.bsky.social rightly wondering about the baffling decision of the current administration of Conway Hall to not allow the Small Publishers Fair to take place at the venue, after twenty-three very successful years... no comment or reason is forthcoming.
Several months down the road, we ought to be able to say, a different kind of book fair will be held at the Conway Hall – the venue, that is, for the Small Publishers Fair for the past twenty-three years. Only the Conway – “a hub for ethical thought and dialogue”, its website says – seems to have taken against books. Why? “Undetermined and unreadable reasons”, we are told, although it does seem that the Conway has its sights on swisher, more corporate activities, such as the Intelligence Squared talks it is hosting in the near future. “I do wonder”, one long-term associate of the fair sighed, “what those old humanists and Bloomsburyites might say about the severance of such an iconic operation, and one that is perhaps the epitome of the ethics of Conway Hall.” We asked the Conway’s current management for comment, in January, nudged, then nudged again this month. The “Head of Commercial” would only cite a “confidentiality agreement” that, alas, prevented her from discussing the matter further.

The Small Publishers Fair is seeking an alternative venue for next year (and, we trust, the long term). In the meantime, a calendar of book fairs – in Lewes, London, Glasgow, Birmingham, Dublin etc – may be consulted via smallpublishersfair.co.uk.

The text reads 'This is a workshop for any medievalist who wants to learn a fun new way to share their expertise. In his book The Comic Toolbox, writer John Vorhaus argues that ‘the difference between a class clown and a class nerd is that the class clown tells jokes everyone gets while the class nerd tells jokes that only he gets'. The basic premise of this workshop is: why can't we do both?'
