I lost my beloved mum last month, so it feels timely to see a fragment of my poem 'FLOURISH' in this new poetry prescription from @poetrypharmacy.bsky.social "For the gentle contemplation of mortality, the making of peace with impermanence and of what remains". Thanks to Deborah Alma for asking. ❤️‍🩹

So glad to have got to Stody Lodge Gardens on the last public open day of the year. Highlights included bracket fungus on a gnarly old tree, walking through shady and ferny woods, seeing dragonflies and lily pads in the Azalea Water Garden, and delphiniums abuzz with bees. 🪻🐝💜

On April 15th 1802, Dorothy Wordsworth recorded the daffodil encounter that inspired her brother's famous poem. I reworked that journal entry to draw out its extraordinary harmonics, in my @vpresslit.bsky.social pamphlet of DW collage poems. The second image highlights DW's gift for music and rhyme.
'Something so wild and new in this feeling' – resting among some daffodils.Poem text:

Among the mossy stones

When we were in the woods beyond
Gowbarrow Park we saw a few daffodils
close to the water-side. We fancied
that the sea had floated the seeds ashore,
and that the little colony had so sprung up.
But as we went along there were more
and yet more;
and at last, under the boughs
of the trees, we saw that there was a long
belt of them along the shore, about
the breadth of a country turnpike road.
I never saw daffodils so beautiful.
They grew among the mossy stones
about and above them; some rested
their heads upon these stones, as on
a pillow, for weariness; and the rest
tossed and reeled and danced, and
seemed as if they verily laughed
with the wind,
that blew upon them
over the lake; they looked so gay, ever
glancing, ever changing. This wind
blew directly over the lake to them.

Embroiderer extraordinaire Jane Morris died on this day in 1914. Here's my @preraphaelitesoc.bsky.social poem celebrating the entire Morris family: William, Jane, and daughters, May and Jenny. I’ve hidden the names of several Thames-inspired Wm Morris designs within the poem. How many you can spot?!
Here we were on the Thames that is the Thames, amidst the down-like
country and all Cockneydom left far behind, and it was jolly!
                                                                                   – William Morris

On the Thames that is the Thames

by Sarah Doyle

Kelmscott to Kelmscott, House to Manor, borne
by the water’s shushing windrush, The Ark splits
the Thames along its length. Imagine a family,
two by two: parents and daughters, all stitched
with the same silver-blue threads. Imagine how
the weight of their bodies, their cargo of dreams,
is spread, evenlode, through the wooden chambers
of the boat’s heart. Hear the rise and fall of gentle
rocking-song beneath them: cray-dle… cray-dle…
What pattern-work must have been printed, briefly,
onto the meniscus as they passed; a stylised ripple
of petals, a wandle of bramble and vine making
a lea below their bow. Imagine the travellers,
suspended medway between banks, their craft
a brown leaf on green stem, craning west-wey.
The river asks nothing of them, seeks news from
nowhere as its accent rolls from glottal-stopped
cockney to lodden-soft burr. You will soon be
home, Thames sings to itself as much as to those
it carries. You will soon be home, from home.
