Yes. I saw it with Lower Ed. Similar to challenging any orthodoxy, especially when you’re vulnerable to its collapse. You won’t convince them this is bankrupt. We who can live with the ambiguity of post austerity have to build better incentives for them, without them — and despite them. Sigh.

I find the math wars here fascinating because I think it highlights a central tension of LLMs in academia, and also a common misperception of what research is. Very rarely is getting “the answer” the main project. It is the process that matters. How did you arrive at this answer is what matters.

very true, as the people yelling at Justin are rightly pointing out, that the calls for bipartisanship, civility, and agreement across difference are often weaponized to keep ghastly views and people warm and comfy in polite company. also true that we all need to develop a middle gear

if I support Local Ballot Initiative #47 this year and you oppose it, are we as human beings on different political "sides" or do we just not perfectly align on every constituent issue? should we give the same answer whether Initiative #47 is a soda tax or a referendum on genocide?

Justin's getting a lot of shit for this and I get why people are mad about it, but I think part of what's going on here is the distorting effects of the background context of two-party politics as the default way we sort people into "sides" and the downstream effects of how we interpret disagreement
