We ended up getting bused from Centralia to Portland. The 4 hour trip turned into 8 hours. But Amtrak automatically issued an apology email and a voucher for the full fare, so that was nice!

Unfortunately, these trains really do need to replaced. The locomotive broke down just before Centralia, WA from Seattle to Portland. They handed out snack packs to while we were waiting without power, and rest of the food. Eventually the next train rescued us and pushed us to the next station.

Lame excuse for what? To inconvenience riders by slowing them down even more just to maybe hopefully recoup a small amount of fares for riders who aren’t transferring to/from the subway? I don’t see how this would be better for riders at all.

MTA has strict transfer rules that would be a problem if replacement shuttles also charge fares. You’re only allowed one transfer per trip (subway to bus, bus to subway, bus to bus), some exceptions apply.
