AI may be “good at math”, but will it ever experience the joy of being stuck on a commutative algebra exercise for an hour until you finally find the proof and realise it’s actually trivial? #MathSky

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

With Halloween approaching, I'm offering a new human-designed mathematical "flying" nylon earring design at a special introductory price! www.diffgeom.com/product/vola... Stock is limited, price includes shipping. (Available in the US only.) #Math #MathArt #SciArt #Jewelry #3DPrinting
Volante October: A pair of mirror-image nylon earrings with sterling silver findings, one orange and one other black, in the shape of fluted mathematical pyramids that suggest cooling fins or bat wings or a superhero insignia. They hang on a display card reading "Differential Geometry: Elegance, beauty, love of math" and are surrounded by autumn leaves on a glazed ceramic tile.

It's funny because noted sex-cult leader Big Yuds' argument for the AI murdering us all is that it will be a ruthlessly "logical" machine, whereas current AI is a gaussian blur of the Collective Unconscious and if it nukes us all its because we wrote a lot of fiction where AI tries to kill humans.

Knowledge is NOT politically neutral. The scientific method is a tool for deriving knowledge. So why then, are we telling the arbiters of the scientific method and developers of knowledge to be politically neutral? Are scientists supposed to forsake knowledge for politics sake?

The Fermi paradox becomes a lot less paradoxical once you accept that "aliens will form constantly expanding interstellar empires" is not some self-evident truth. Just seems that a lot of people can't wrap their head around that

Here I have a function that interested me today, so I wrote a program to plot it. The way it’s defined is it takes the sign expansion of a surreal number and feed it to a conditionally convergent series. For example, if your input is 1.5, that corresponds to (++-) -> 1/1 + 1/2 - 1/3.

Over on Twitter they are talking about solutions to the Fermi Paradox. Mine is that space is huge, we haven't been looking that long, and separating the hypothetical signatures of alien civilizations from random radio noise is significantly harder than most people think.

Altair is a nearby A-type star. It is also one of the hottest nearby stars with X-ray emission, probably arising from corona around its equatorial regions, where convective envelope which sustain them persist on this highly oblate star. #art #astronomy #space #spaceart #star #Altair
This artwork depicts a fictional view of Altair's corona seen with SDO AIA camera's 171 Å channel, accompanied by some information.

At the centre is the star; the photosphere is entirely dark, and the corona can be seen as a faint band ringing the star's equator and intermediate latitudes, while the visible pole is dark. The corona is depicted as slightly heterogenous, with dark patches and bright spots scattered across it.

At top left is basic information about Altair (α Aql): mass of 1.86 ± 0.03 Solar masses, radii of 2.008 ± 0.006 Solar radii (equator) / 1.565 ± 0.014 Solar radii (pole), effective temperature of 6780 K (equator) / 8621 K (pole), and rotation period of 7.79 hours.

Top right contains my summary of Altair's coronal properties obtained from Robrade & Schmitt (2009). The coronal surface flux is comparable to solar background corona, the plasma temperature is similar to low activity stars like the Sun and is dominated by quiescent/weakly active regions and open magnetic fields with weak contributions from moderately active regions, and that the coronal structures are small (few %) relative to the star. Altair's X-ray flux varies, arising from both rotational modulation, as well as intrinsic variabilities, eg. emergence and decay of active regions. Flares are not detected, as expected.Same as previous image, although Altair's limb and equator are outlined as solid line and dashed line, respectively.

Abstract
We provide a clearer presentation of the Chair44 monotile, a new strongly aperiodic
monotile in three-dimensional Euclidean space E3
.
With LLM tools (ChatGPT Astra), Ioannis Tsiokos recently reported the first
known strongly aperiodic monotile in three-dimensional Euclidean space E
3
, the Chair44
monotile (see Figure 3, taken from Tsiokos’ preprint [11]). Hats off to Tsiokos for this
discovery, the framework he developed, and the human inquiry that led to the Chair44
monotile.
However, the paper itself and the formalization that it claims for support are not
in a form that is readily usable to anyone who wants to understand or check it. This is
not just because of the needless length or complexity of the argument (which is indeed
overwhelming as presented), or because the formal repository is not in normal form, or
because much of the text is misleading or poorly organized, but mainly because there
is so much irrelevant puff to push through. These are hallmarks of an LLM-driven
research paper.
We must, absolutely, insist on a higher standard for scientific discourse. The aim
must be to communicate, clearly, with people in the community — certainly this is an
historical requirement for publication.1

Pretty sure this is also a genuine concern people talked about when trying to formalize IUT (from Mochizuki). If a definition, theorem or axiom is stated poorly, it renders everything useless

This might just be my ignorance talking, but why do people consider computer-checked proofs to be infallible? I get why’d someone think that they were more secure than a human proof. But, like, Lean has bugs you know. It’s certainly isn’t perfect… #MathSky #Lean #Logic

Somewhere in a distant planetary system, some civilization decided "the moon next to the one we live on looks pretty comfortable, maybe we should check it out?" For the most part they were correct, though their rover didn't last nearly as long as they hoped. "Meteorological malfunctions" they said.
A blue gas giant hangs in the sky above a colorful landscape, purple-red mountains in the distance tower over a terrain awashed by various sandy and dull green hues. A snaking trail in the dirt extends off towards the horizon, with a small rover wrapped in golden foil overturned on its bank. Following the trail leads the the base of a tornado, wrapped in a debris cloud. The funnel twists up into a stormy sky of heavy, chaotic clouds.
