I don't know why this is so hard for some people to grasp. If we extend our use of fossil gas, rather than going all-out for grid batteries, heat pumps and induction hobs, we extend our dependence on *foreign* sources of gas, regardless of whether we also use the UK's last remaining reserves. 🧵

You might have formed the impression that Paul Johnson, former director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, knows what he's talking about. The media treats him like the voice of God. But here he is - and not for the first time - talking out of his hat. Let's break it down in a short thread. 🧵
This is utter garbage. I believe in net zero. We need to get there. But renewables are not competitive. That's why they are subsidised. Fossil fuel markets are highly competitive. It shouldn't be hard to hold these two thoughts at the same time.

V good letter in The Guardian on Labour’s flailing hopelessness in the face of Reform. Come on, Labour. The country is crying out for better. We’re sick of this ugly rightwing agenda. It brings nothing but failure. It’s disloyal to your voters and to the country. You’ve got power and time. Use them.
• Re your article (Labour targets international students claiming asylum after election losses to Reform, 3 May), the insistence of this Labour government on responding to the perceived threat of Reform by aping it on the issues where it is strong is utterly mind-boggling.
I don't think any electable party will be more anti-immigration than Reform. The portion of the electorate for whom immigration is the one issue they care about won't be persuaded to vote Labour by it pledging to reduce asylum applications from international students. It's a ludicrous idea and, at best, only serves to reduce the distinction between the two parties.
In reality, Reform is weak on almost every conceivable area: the economy, the NHS, Donald Trump, Brexit... the list of vulnerabilities is almost without limit. Yet the government chooses to engage on the only ground on which Reform is sure-footed. It's utterly bizarre.
How is a party with five MPs, fewer than 800 local councillors and no actual policies allowed to dictate the agenda in this way?

Here, from the parliamentary transcript, is the moment I felt: "it's like the start of a disaster movie, where no one seems prepared to understand the warning they're being given." committees.parliament.uk/oralevidence...
George Monbiot: Yes. We certainly need all of that. We need a great
deal of innovation right across the board, but this is about something
else. This is about the system itself, and the system operates on
principles that are completely different from those that the Committee
has been discussing so far. They are the principles that affect all complex
systems, and there has been no recognition of this. A role that the UK
could have would be to start the international conversation that urgently
needs to be had.

Spring reminder, as people start to think about gardening: NEVER buy compost with peat it in (inexplicably still on sale). If it does not say "peat free" in big letters, do not buy it. Peat is incredibly valuable in peat bogs, for rare biodiversity and as a carbon store. Don't put it on your garden!

. @lewisgoodall.com expertly sums up why Trump's 10% tariff on UK imports (compared to the 20% tariff he put on EU imports) isn't really the 'Brexit win' people are claiming... Read his full blog 👉 buff.ly/KBu48tl
I can understand this impulse to clutch at straws, but I am afraid it is largely just that. Let us consider the logic of that statement. It is posited that it is a vindication of Brexit that we have avoided an additional 10%. That is true, if we were still in the EU we’d be looking at 20% with no obvious means of securing a deal to ensure its reduction, which we now enjoy. But so what? For the reasons I’ve outlined above, 10% is bad enough. But looking at this moment as a Brexit benefit ignores the endless economic disbenefit that we’ve endured since 2016 and ignores the far bigger picture. Our currency remains devalued. UK goods exports to the EU have declined, with some studies showing a 27% drop in exports and a 32% drop in imports between 2021 and 2023 compared to a scenario without Brexit. Services have been less affected, showing more resilience to deal with the exigencies of the TCA but every study would suggest they are lower than they would have been without the years of uncertainty Brexit caused. Overall, the OBR has said that the UK economy will be 4% smaller than it would have been without Brexit, our trade intensity with the EU will be 15% down on where it would have been in the medium term and the overall economic damage will be comparable to the damage created by Covid. Compared to all of that, the 10% Trump tariff differential is a rounding error. It is like giving £100 to Peter, receiving £20 from Paul and congratulating oneself on a job well done.
