Inflation in August rose from 3.5% to 4.0%, which might make you think the RBA had a point in raising interest rates yesterday. The problem is that all of the increase was due to petrol prices.

Slop. My @smh @theage cartoon.
Single frame. Title - instruction: “[place cartoon here - ed]”. Appearance of yellow torn out lined note paper held in place by sticky tape. Text: “The Herald-Sun has this week published an AI cartoon, where previously they might have commissioned one of their (dwindling) stable of artists. And it makes sense. (Not the cartoon.) After all, what is a cartoon, but a picture with a caption and maybe some helpful labels to make a point? In this case, a point the editor who prompted it wanted to make.
I mean, how hard can cartooning be? We would all be doing them if it weren’t for our lack of drawing skill (and some cartoonists aren’t very skilled, let’s face it), and AI means nobody has to pay the outrageous fees that “artists” charge, while they can “borrow” their existing work to train AI. It’s literally a no-brainer!” (Small picture of a brain crossed out) “We can only hope they can keep up the quality, once the AI can only be trained using other AI cartoons.”

Neoclassical econ assumes rationality. The corollary of, "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" is "you're rich, so you must be very smart!" Thus, people assume that if powerful, well-compensated CEOs insist that "AI is changing everything," well then, *AI must be changing everything*. 1/

Fluffy grey dog, big eyes, sitting with paws raised, “But how would I reap such fabulous profits from gambling addicts if you took away my poker machines?” 3. Large brown dog crouching flat with tongue out, big eyes, tail wagging, “Even if they do use masses of water and electricity, and AI is an existential threat to humanity, all the cool kids have data centres…” 4. Little fluffy blond dog, big eyes, belly up, “If you keep subsidising my digging up resources and diesel fuel use, I promise I’ll cut back on my emissions.”

Luc van Vliet's lucid exposition & arguments are helping me see how psychoanalytic thinking is valuable for thinking about politics I found Luc's articulation of the racist fantasy structure & what that means for combating racism insightful & illuminating lucvanvliet.substack.com/p/the-austra...
Excerpt from Luc van Vliet's The Australian Racist Fantasy

"The racist fantasy

My argument here is based on the psychoanalytic insight that racism is impervious to knowledge because it is based on an underlying fantasy that unconsciously structures racist thinking. While at the level of content, the racist fantasy about job-stealing immigrants is illogical and incoherent, at the level of structure the fantasy follows a clear logic. The value of psychoanalytic thinking, with its focus on the ways that unconscious processes undermine avowed positions (e.g. the racist diatribe that usually follows when someone says "I'm not racist, but") is valuable for thinking about politics.

What is the structural role of fantasy in sustaining racist thinking? The psychoanalytic thinker Tood McGowan (2021, p. 22) writes:

"The fundamental task of fantasy is to transform an impossible satisfaction that no one could attain into a prohibited satisfaction that becomes unattainable due to the fantasized obstacle that prevents the subject from having its object. There is no such thing as complete satisfaction. But complete satisfaction comes to appear possible through the erection of an obstacle to it."

We all have things we want, things we think will make us happier and more satisfied than we currently feel - that dream job, ideal relationship, or latest commodity. As many of our myths reflect, we are on some level aware that ultimate satisfaction is as attainable as the end of a rainbow. It recedes as we approach it, always just out of reach. Fantasy turns the pot of gold at the end of the metaphorical rainbow from an impossible to a prohibited satisfaction, that is, it constructs an obstacle to a fantasy object that makes it seem possible to obtain satisfaction through the object but for the obstacle."
