I'm back in The New York Times, with news that we might have spotted a first magnetic field on an exoplanet! If so it would be more than 2,000 times stronger than Earth's, and could be a key tool in future hunts for habitability. Exciting! www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/s...

The movement of the magnetic North Pole over 400 years www.nytimes.com/2019/02/04/s...
A map titled 'Heading North' showing the movement of Earth's north magnetic pole from 1590 to 2019. The map displays the Arctic region, including parts of Canada, Greenland, Russia, and Svalbard. A blue line traces the magnetic pole's path from southern Canada in 1590, meandering northward through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago until 1900, then continuing as a dotted line toward Russia through 2019. The geographic North Pole is marked with a black square. The map illustrates that the magnetic pole is moving about 35 miles closer to Russia each year.

I'm still rather proud of the data transformation I did for this map. We had rasters showing ship density, and we made a map of those, but I also wanted to make the routes stand out. So, I eyeballed the main corridors and drew out a main route skeleton.
A map of vessel traffic in the seas around Alaska. Lines track major routes, and each line is split into multiple colors representing types of ships (cargo, tanker, tugs, and fishing). The thickness of lines varies by the level of traffic.A monochrome raster of ship density in areas around Alaska. There are bright linear features where many ships traverse.

On this day in 1966, Star Trek debuted in Canada, two days before it aired anywhere else. Canadian stations often aired American programs early since Canadians could pick up American transmissions directly and this avoided competing for viewers and ad revenue. 📸 NBC
