The worst aspect is knowing how fixable all of our problems are. Humanity can do such wonderful and incredible things when we work together collectively. We've just decided to let the worst of us dictate our future and that's the most depressing thing of all.

A cropped screenshot of an article section titled "Gary Larson cartoon incident" from a Tumblr page. The text describes a controversy involving a Far Side cartoon and Jane Goodall.

_____________

Gary Larson cartoon incident

_____________

In 1987 Gary Larson published a Far Side cartoon of two chimpanzees grooming, in which one discovers a blonde hair and says, "Conducting a little more 'research' with that Jane Goodall tramp?"[127] The Jane Goodall Institute called the cartoon an "atrocity" in a letter drafted by its lawyers to Larson and his syndicate. Goodall, who was in Africa at the time, later found the cartoon amusing.[128]

She went on to name it her favourite depiction of herself in pop culture.[129] Larson offered profits from sales of a shirt featuring the cartoon to the Jane Goodall Institute.[130]

Goodall wrote the preface to The Far Side Gallery 5, detailing her version of the controversy.[131] She praised Larson's creative ideas, which often compare and contrast the behaviour of humans and animals.

In 1988 Larson visited Goodall's research facility in Tanzania.[128] While there, he was attacked by a chimpanzee named Frodo.[127][132]

One of the stated goals of the ADF, Heritage, and Family policy council was to drive a wedge between the LGBTQ community to divide and conquer it. This pick me is willingly doing that work for them and is constantly being platformed by major media like the Atlantic and the WSJ.
A screenshot of a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Ben Appel (@benappel) with a verified blue checkmark.
The text of the post reads: "'I was gay, I had faced discrimination, and I had fought for my rights. But now that gay rights had become “LGBTQ” rights, I found myself force-teamed with a lot of people whose values were nothing like mine.' My latest op-ed for The Wall Street Journal:"
Below the text is a link preview for an article from wsj.com. This is from the NYT masthead editorial about the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The highlighted line invalidates not just the editorial, but the very idea of newspaper editorials crafted by the consensus of a board. Better to publish nothing at all than to publish a line like this.
"The temperature in Minneapolis is dangerously high. There is an urgent need for the federal agents deployed to the city to step back and take a breath before more Americans are hurt or killed. [Highlighted]: Those protesting the Trump administration have an equal obligation to avoid violence.

Landlords want permission to evict people without cause (who have faithfully paid their rent) so they can jack up the rent and make more money. The Ford government is planning to give it to them. This is going to evict so many people into homelessness, especially seniors. Truly sociopathic.

Proposed changes from the Ontario government would drastically reduce protection for tenants. This is appalling and would put some folks in serious danger in this era of very low vacancy, skyrocketing rental rates, and rent decontrol. Nearly 40% of Ottawa residents are renters.
Changes to landlord-tenant disputes

The bill is proposing a number of changes when it comes to disputes between landlords and tenants. Among other things, tenants would be required to give prior notice of issues they intend to raise at hearings and would not be allowed to introduce new issues without warning. The province says this is to avoid adjournments where the parties aren’t prepared to speak to an issue.

The bill would also scrap the need for a landlord to offer a tenant compensation if they would like to take their property back for their own use, as long as they give 120 days notice. If the landlord gives less than that, they would still be required to provide one months rent or offer a comparable unit as compensation.

As well, the province wants to shorten the grace period to issue an eviction notice after rent non-payment, from 14 days to seven, and shorten the time to request a review of a final hearing order from 30 to 15 days.Making it easier for residential landlords to end leases

The province wants to explore the possibility of modifying “security of tenure,” currently enjoyed by tenants under the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA). The current law means tenants have a right to remain in their rental unit as long as they follow the lease agreement and the RTA. Landlords cannot evict tenants without a legally valid reason under the current law and after a fixed-term lease ends, the tenancy typically continues on a month-to-month basis.

But the Ford government says it would like to consult on “alternative options on lease agreement expiry” that would give landlords more control over their units, “allowing them to adjust tenancy arrangements based on market conditions, personal needs, or business strategies.”

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.
AI impoverishes us at every step of the process:
- data centers pollute our environment
- energy use drives up costs
- content theft robs creators of income
- the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages
- using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence
- the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape

All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

My 40M spouse had a chat gpt history complaining about my looks 36F. Do I continue our marriage?

I 36F just had our second child a few months ago. My 40M spouse had been distant lately so I went to check his phone to see if anything was up. We both have each others passcodes and have never been secretive. I saw his chat GPT history complaining I was ugly and he feels he "settled for me". He was looking into plastic surgery etc- adding pictures of me with our daughter and asking Al for input. To say I'm devastated is an understatement. I'm not a super model but I know I am pretty. I don't have time to put on make up and do hair. I'm looking after our two children. I also prefer to be natural; I'm comfortable in my own skin.called him out immediately- and he had a panic attack. He said he's been getting hyper focused on everything and his thoughts spiral. To be fair- I agree with this. He has been obsessing about his blood pressure and is on SO many supplements. He also has a horrible past. His father was physically/ verbally abusive and his mother stayed with him until he was a late teenager. He never talks about his past. I told him he needs to delete chat gpt; take a mental health leave and go seek counseling. I have taken myself and the kids to my parents house.

I just don't know what to do. I love my kids, and I love him. I just feel devastated about what he thinks about me.
