When I was a newspaper reporter, it was part of my job in Huntsville to go and witness the executions conducted at one of the prisons in town. I don't remember the exact number I was present for but it was close to at least a dozen, each of them via lethal injection. /1

Raqefet Cave in Israel was a sacred burial site for the hunter-gatherer culture known as the 'Natufians' around 13,000 years ago. More recently, we've also discovered here the earliest evidence of BEER BREWING from grains. Even more remarkable because these people HADN'T INVENTED AGRICULTURE YET.

The first time I read anything by a singularity believer on the internet (~1997), they firmly believed that ethics was rational and that a super-intelligence would naturally be hyper-moral. This turn to a doomsday cult is very weird.

My 10 year old yesterday after watching some science and video game videos on YouTube, “there were a bunch of commercials. Some of them were saying Josh Shapiro is a good guy. And some saying he’s a bad guy. What’s that all about?” So we had to talk about the upcoming elections and campaigns.

Here's a gift link to my 9/11 essay in the NYT. Civil libertarians long warned that before giving government new powers, we should consider how an administration with authoritarian ambition might abuse them. We were told that America was too exceptional to elect such a person. Well here we are.

Reminds me of one of my favorites
Everyone will not just

If your solution to some problem relies on “if everyone would just…” then you don’t have a solution. Everyone is not going to just. At not time in the history of the universe has everyone just, and they’re not going to start now.

Hey, this is actually my speculative theory! One proposal of consciousness is a system that ruminates on memories of the past and fantasizes projections of the future. I posit that financial markets do both and the primary substrate of its mind is excel spreadsheets in place of neurons.
