In 1997 I was at an art conference where everyone was saying cozy things about close-knit deeply rooted small communities so I stood up and said "I am a San Franciscan and I live among people those close-knit deeply rooted small communities wanted to kill."

I think Leon turning out to have fostered 140 children and may have done more good than anyone else, by some measurements, should be shouted from the rooftops. In Norway, children in care end up getting into higher education in the same proportions as the general population. 3x UK performance

Going back to that basic premise, and the expectations of their starting points at the time, 'lacking the structures of family, money, social support, etc, you'd expect it to be more highlighted and celebrated as part of the story', because of how restrictive those expectations were.

100%. Language depends on context. So "Their eyes met" is absolutely readable as "they looked into each other's eyes" Adults know "have you time to drive me to the airport?" is a often question about willingness not time.

“She smelled of a summer garden on a golden evening, sun warmed earth and fresh cool water.” “Did she ACTUALLY though?” Look. Basic reading comprehension for the straw man: from the description, how did the character A’s smell make character B feel? Why do you think the writer used those words?

“Her eyes flashed dark.” “What, how?” A rush of adrenal feedback caused her pupils to dilate momentarily, and for her to make a sudden movement with her head. The POV character, hyperaware in this situation, noticed these body cue as what they were, a sign of anger or strong emotion. C’mon.

My dad, who has been watching the #70Up series since 14-Up, made an interesting point about two of the participants, and a societal change over time, and I think it's an under-discussed aspect. And it's the care system.

My fave Jeffrey Archer story is it absolute skewers the "by my bootstraps" argument. He went bankrupt, and wrote a book and it was his go to pep story for decades. Wrote a book during nine months food and lodging provided at an Oxford college because the master was a friend.

“Zionism is racism” is not a policy but a slogan. It compresses a complex history, going back millennia, and a very wide set of beliefs into one narrow meaning. The answer to genocide is not discrimination. We don't fight racism with racism. I’m gutted to see this motion adopted by the Green Party.

The cover of Wiz-4 a novella anthology from Wizards Tower Press
The book shows the two novellas by dividing the cover into two triangles the line being top left to bottom right corners.
Left is Top Tips for Loving a Lizard. It shows a jolly green Godzilla holding a smaller ginger King Kong, with a big red heart. There’s a definite more than best friends vibe.
Right is Marooned off Ceres which shows a red moon, a space turtle and a female astronaut who is black. It’s not framed to feel like a threat.

The universe was so old and so big, Harry quite accepted there might be intelligence out there somewhere but it would take them thousands of years to travel. He was also convinced that the tribal god of a small sandy plot in the Middle East had not created the world, let alone the universe. So, who knows what aliens would look like, or think, or how they would have sex? Maybe they’d reproduce by cutting pieces off and repotting them, like his Mum’s geraniums.
Normal people had no time for the idea that the aliens would turn up, then hide, so they could manipulate world zinc prices or something. And how long could they stay secret, really?

You, dear reader, know that Aiden is a lizard. Harry is shagging him and doesn't.

Here are my four novellas (and the forthcoming Wiz-4 from Wizard's Tower Press, a two-novella collection.)

The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Murder by Stephen Cox
A striking book cover with the title and author name dominating.
A rich dark blue background, and a touch of mist. The text appears in gold in a gold rectangular frame, the font is old fashioned implying C19th century. The frame has three rondels or cameos each containing a picture. Top right is a golden bee brooch with the body and one wing streaked with red blood. Middle left is foxgloves, spires of small bell flowers in pink, white and purple. Bottom right is a dark brown medicine bottle, with a pale label. The word LAUDANUM is just visible.
There are pink highlights on some of the letters.
Taken together it is bold, mysterious, and Victorian.
The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Terror
A striking book cover clearly in the same series as The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Terror.
The lettering and detail are pale against a dark and sinister red-brown. The Title is in large Victorian lettering emphasising the word Terror by size of font and red added to letters – not dripping blood! - and framed by gold. Three roundels show icons related to the book; left, a half folded cutthroat razor streaked with red, top right, pearl jewellery with three pearls and a pearl effect locket; bottom right a burning railwayman’s lamp.
The effect is striking.

The Our Child of the Stars books
Our Child of the Stars and Our Child of Two Worlds, beautiful book covers. Both show a boy silhouetted against a mysterious sky. Our Child of the Stars shows a misty night, but many bright stars. Our Child of Worlds shows dawn breaking pink and blue, with yellow birds rising and a mysterious planet.
