a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Justice Alito devotes an entire chapter of his new book to the emergency docket—and to responding to people like me (“the most prolific academic critic of the emergency docket”). As I explain over at “One First,” it … didn’t go well: www.stevevladeck.com/p/256-so-une...
In the pre-publication galleys to his new book, So Ordered: An Originalist’s View of the Constitution, the Court, and Our Country, Justice Alito spelled my last name inconsistently. This is, I suspect, the pettiest possible point on which to open in discussing a Supreme Court justice’s new memoir, and I would never have mentioned it except for the fact that inconsistency turns out to be the organizing feature of the chapter in which I (“the most prolific academic critic of the emergency docket”) repeatedly appear. The central inconsistency of Chapter 8, which is devoted to the emergency docket, is structural: Rather than tackle the subject holistically (as one might expect in a book), Alito mashed together the speech he gave five years ago at Notre Dame Law School with a “postscript.” The former was deeply flawed even at the time (among lots of other things, Alito repeatedly insisted that there was “nothing new” about the Court’s behavior on emergency applications during the first Trump administration and COVID); and the latter tries to move the goalposts away from the specific phenomena to which critics like me have actually objected. The result is to leave readers with a disjointed, inaccurate, and misleading sense of what the debate is even about—to say nothing of how the Court’s own behavior since September 2021 (including Alito’s) has only further undermined the already-flawed claims Alito made back then. Somewhere between the galleys of Alito’s book and the final product (which hits bookstores today), someone apparently figured out that my last name should be spelled the same way (and correctly!) throughout. The other, more significant inconsistencies were, apparently, harder to fix.

It feels genuinely ridiculous having to say this, but the point of art is to connect with another human. Someone thought of that painting or melodic line or scene or paragraph that is suddenly making you weep, and that means that they saw you and understood you without even meeting you.

For LOTS OF REASONS I don’t think it is ever okay for a professor to date a student in their own department. It’s an obvious power imbalance and potentially disastrous for the student’s education and career. So it is real jarring and not fun to see it portrayed as a cute happy romance in a novel!

update: what is OP's brother so upset about? not getting his DUI charges completely dropped. OP's main concern? they paid a lot of money for that lawyer!
mkizys • 2d
The court can order forfeiture of counsel, which means he loses his right to an attorney because of his behavior.
They can't force a lawyer to work with him after he became violent with previous counsel. However the court can approve remote counsel so they'll never meet face to face. What's the misdemeanor for and what led to him attacking his lawyer?

weddingcake34 OP • 2d
DUI. The lawyer got drug possession charges and reckless conduct dropped but the state wouldn't drop the DUI. So it was going to go to a trial and the lawyer was preparing him for that. He drives for work and was going to lose his license and freaked out on the attorney. We spent so much money on that lawyer too.weddingcake34 OP • 2d
Yes he understands now I think at least. Hes being charged with multiple felonies and other charges too just on this case alone. Definitely lost his job and his license. But apparently the attorney doesn't even want to press charges and the judge is basically forcing him to anyway which doesn't make any sense. He doesnt want to testify so I thought maybe it would get dropped but his secretary is willing to so apparently they don't need the lawyer to agree.
They said they can use his medical records and the medical staff from the hospital will testify but I thought that HIPPA would prevent that.
And one attorney that I spoke to last week said his sentence for this incident wont even start until his DUl one is over because he was on bail when he got this one so it could be a few years for the DUl one and then 15 or 20 for the assault and attempted murder so we are just trying to make sure everything is above the bored.

Walgreens has confirmed initial state-by-state availability of Covid vaccines. It may change — last year, some states that initially had age or prescription limits lost them when state officials acted — but this is the situation for now. Other pharmacies may have different policies.

We will continue to update availability as appropriate.

States where the 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine will be available at Walgreens pharmacies soon to patients ages 3+:

AL, AK, AR, CA, CO, DE, HI, ID, LA, ME, MD, MI, MN, MS, NE, NV, NH, NM, NY, OK, PA, RI, SD, TN, TX, VA, WA, WV, DC

States where the 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine will be available soon, subject to state-specific age restrictions:

CT (12+), FL (18+), GA (13+), IL (7+), IN (11+), IA (18+), KS (12+), KY (5+), MA (5+), MO (7+), MT (7+), NJ (5+), NC (7+), OH (5+), SC (16+), TX (14+), VT (5+), WI (6+), WY (7+)

States where pharmacist administration will be available with a prescription. List may change:

AZ, OR, UT

U.S. territories where the vaccine is not currently available for administration at Walgreens pharmacies:

Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands
