Pre-registering my opinion (before my paper's reviews are released) that the AAAI AI reviews are essentially worthless. It's not that they are necessarily bad, but they just have no substance to them. They are at best a long summary with some superficial points pointed out.

I can't say I understand why this inkwell from the 16th century was made, but it's well done.
Inkwell in the form of a foot. The mouth of the inkwell is painted to resemble a human mouth, with a human face, or mask, painted on top of the foot.

Neural networks don't have "representations"

They have embeddings, or meaningful patterns of neuron activation

They're meaningful in the sense of enabling us to do certain things

Differences that make a difference (to us)

They don't copy, reflect, or re-present the world

A common remark from AI/ML conference reviewers is: "The paper lacks a clear message." This attitude goes opposite to how research is done. Sometimes, the message is the entire paper and it can't be compressed into 140 signs. Simplified messages mislead and are usually false. #academicsky #MLsky

Another cool example: Commoner's firefighting jacket (hikeshibanten) Japan, 19th c. Cotton cloth w/ indigo dye (sashiko & tsutsugaki), 98x 127cm Seattle Art Museum "The oversized #spider hovering over the go board alludes to Tsuchigumo (Earth Spider)…” samblog.seattleartmuseum.org/2017/10/fire...
official museum photo of the object on white background: "A large spider-with an endearing face-looms over the shoulder of the jacket, where it hovers menacingly over an abandoned go board. The range of tonalities centers on indigo, white, black, and greyish-brown, with red accents on the fan; this color palette visually unites the work, creating parallels between the spider's eyes and the go pieces."

“The oversized spider hovering over the go board alludes to Tsuchigumo ("Earth Spider"), the Noh drama that tells the story of the warrior Minamoto Yorimitsu fighting off the monstrous earth spider, who is disguised as a monk.”

“The jacket tells a story from the life of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (948–1021), a warrior-hero. The story is as follows: Yorimitsu was sick, and was resting in bed. He was visited by a priest—but the priest was actually a giant spider (tsuchigumo) in disguise! Yorimitsu, being very clever, sees through the disguise, and attacks the spider with his sword, wounding him. Yorimitsu’s four attendants, called the Four Heavenly Kings, were playing a game of go while guarding him, and leapt up to track the spider back to his den.[2]

This narrative was popular in theatrical productions, and there was a song in Noh theatre specifically about tsuchigumo, the intimidating earth spider. The story appears frequently in woodblock prints in the nineteenth century as well. The jacket shows the moment when the go game was abandoned, with tsuchigumo retreating back to his web. So great was the hurried effort to find the spider that the attendants left behind their personal effects, scattering go pieces in their haste.”

I know in the humanities you can just use "positivist" to mean "silly wrong opinion", whatever, but it does kinda disappoint me to see this sorta thing in a history of science journal (www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10....). That.... that's not what positivists say about measurement conventions.
"The positivist founders of the discipline of history of science would have dismissed the question—of why 37°C and 38°C became a global norm—since they would have thought the answer to be self-evident: Both travelled to distant societies because they were a truth revealed, “hidden nature” brought to light, based on mathematical reasoning and as such “ecumenical” and of universal validity.6 Present-day historians of science would beg to differ, of course."

This part?? This is why sometimes research doesn’t make immediate sense to people looking at a list of projects but can still lead to important discoveries
The medication was discovered after researchers learned about a family of fire walkers in Pakistan and discovered that they lacked a gene allowing pain signals to fire in their skin. Members of this family could walk over hot coals without flinching.

Wanna bit of writing advice? I try to avoid using ‘this’ in the sense of, for example, “one of the features of this case” unless it’s very close to the referent. It puts cognitive load on the reader to dredge up what it refers to. Better to say “one of the features of the case of the red dog”.
