NeurIPS has >4k accepted papers this year, ranging from purely theoretical work to applied research in completely disjoint areas of machine learning. The idea that some committee could evaluate all of these in a fair manner and then select 1-2 of the best, is bizarre case of brain-rot.

There is a picture with a quote from a WIRED paper. It cites a NeurIPS spokeperson: “The search committees considered all accepted NeurIPS papers equally, and made decisions independently based on the scientific merit of the papers, without making separate considerations on authorship or other factors, in keeping with the NeurIPS blind review process,”
