So the broader point is this: No matter how you slice it, this El Niño event is a very big deal. It is already either the strongest by far (ONI) or tied for strongest (RONI) on record. It will likely become strongest on record, by any measure, by Nov.

Meanwhile, weekly iteration of the relative index (RONI) has been consistently tracking *near* all-time historical records (occasionally just above, occasionally just below) since June. This week it's at +2.2C (vs a +2.0C record).
