The idea they get to live as little dictators over a captive workforce is half the appeal and ideal for a lot of people working in and around football.

They're mad because a former president and the last presidential candidate openly supporting him means they can't whine about how the Establishment is sabotaging them

Everybody's loving this clip, for good reason, but it should remind everyone that cities therefore have an obligation to build enough housing that all these marginalized and outcast people can come and afford to live in them on minimum wage *without* becoming homeless. YIMBY!

The saving grace is, in many of these backsliding countries, only a minority want the most fascist parts. Appears to be about 30-something % into it, with another 20-30% that doesn't really object to the fascism (or necessarily care) and will swing to it if, say, prices went up. Which isn't great.

With great consistency, people who prefer authoritarianism to democracy envision themselves in charge. Could be them personally, could be vicarious, but they're always the boot, not the face. It's basically a way to say everyone should shut up and accept that we're doing my preferences, not theirs.

past a certain point of wealth you stop thinking anyone else has a right to correct you about anything, and that all of your arguments can be won on the basis of "I have more money than you do" this doesn't exactly lead to "benevolent" in practice

Organizations like the ADL exist at this point to protect the state of Israel from criticism, but cloak it in the language of “fighting antisemitism.” By being an actual committed non-Zionist who is against antisemitism, Mamdani calls their bluff.

These American Jewish advocacy organizations are actually more threatened by Mamdani releasing a comprehensive anti-antisemitism plan than they would be by him being openly antisemitic, because it forces them to admit that one can be an anti-Zionist without being antisemitic.

A recurring controversy in left-wing spaces is "Was Person X being antisemitic or does he just call everyone he's arguing with a 'filthy lapdog of the globo-capitalist elites who should be liquidated along with his spawn'?" and I'm kind of tired of it, to be entirely honest.

I think it's pretty clear by now that there is nowhere near a majority of voters, anywhere, who inherently see far-right authoritarianism as extrinsic to the success or survival of democratic systems.

In Trump’s first term, he escalated in Afghanistan, bombed Syria, escalated with Iran, and loosened rules of engagement to allow more civilian casualties. Out of office, he said the problem in Gaza was Israel held back too much. But for some reason, “anti-war” types didn’t think that mattered.

Tucker Carlson’s frustrated bafflement when confronted with basic things like “the UK’s GDP is larger than Russia’s” and “in 1994, Ukraine, Russia, US, and UK signed a treaty called the Budapest Memorandum” shows the state of Putin apologetics. Without lies and conspiracy theories, it falls apart.

Yes, the conspiracy theory requires believing that Gorbachev, the person best positioned to know what really happened, lied about it repeatedly for no reason, and stuck to a consistent story. AND requires treating that probably-didn’t-actually-happen word in private as above a real signed treaty.

the birthright citizenship question is, to me, the clearest evidence that originalism as practiced is just living constitutionalism for right-wing jurists. the originalist answer is the conventional one is the textual one, but that was basically unacceptable to much of the right.

Putin apologists of the right (eg Tucker Carlson) and left (eg Noam Chomsky) got what they wanted: a U.S. government that treats the war as not Russia’s fault, cuts military support for Ukraine, and pressures Ukraine to give up land in exchange for the Kremlin’s word. It has not resulted in peace.

If blue collar work was inherently upwardly mobile, everyone would do it. But the world doesn’t work that way. Capitalism doesn’t work that way. And people who romanticize blue collar work as having a quiet dignity are being patronizing, even if they don’t intend to

The people talking about the dignity of being, say, a welder, have never welded anything. And as far as “the pay is actually good” arguments go, the starting pay is good. The pay a few years in is good. But there’s a ceiling and it hits at about the same time the physical toll of the job does

there is a certain type of person who believes firmly that the United States is the worst country in the history of time and, like people who believe that the United States is the best country in the history of time, all of their other beliefs flow from that point.

Right, “culture” or “assimilation” is obviously a canard. The bigots mean race — some of them are just smart enough to know that more people recoil if they say “race” and relatively fewer will if they say “culture.”

I’ve said before and I’ll say again that you can’t cleanly distinguish between a politician’s personal morality and public conduct, because sopulist campaign promises are often reflective of low moral character, and low moral character usually leads to poor performance of one’s public duties.

More plausible that the reverse is true: Manhattan Institute’s more technical scholarship is what lends mainstream respectability to an unreconstructed racist like Christopher Rufo and gains him regular access to, say, the New York Times.
