#MinCup26 Round 1 Match 16 It's a pair of industrially-vital minerals for the final match of the first round as tin ore #Cassiterite is up against elemental carbon #Graphite. VOTE: www.mineralcup.org/2026/vote-re... RESULTS: www.mineralcup.org/2026/vote-re...
Split photo of cassiterite crystals, silvery to shiny black, in shapes similar to faceted gemstones and a flat, hexagonal graphite crystal jutting up, dark grey with a greasy shine.

Came to read about #pyrrhotite because "bad for concrete" is important for us here in CT (lots of local research). Voting for #pyrrhotite because black smokers, and because it is found in Martian meteorites and may help us in interpreting the magnetic signatures in the ancient Martian crust.

This scraper account posts other people’s stuff without credit. They grudgingly post a separate attribution after the fact, if enough people call them out. Any time an account says “dm me if you own the original,” just put them on the block list. Don’t let these accounts get a foothold here.

Crater Fact Friday ☄️DID YOU KNOW☄️ about peak-ring basins? These craters typically form at sizes larger than complex craters, and have an interior ring of peaks surrounding the crater's center (hence the name). They can be found on Mercury, Venus, the Moon, Earth, and Mars!
Raditladi, a relatively young peak-ring crater on Mercury. Raditladi, first imaged during MESSENGER's first Mercury flyby and named in April 2008, continues to be an intriguing region of study, with its well-preserved features, relatively young age, exterior impact melt ponds, hollows-covered peak ring, and concentric troughs on its floor.Barton, a peak-ring crater on Venus. I can't stop staring at these photos. This is what Earthset looks like—our homeworld setting behind the Moon. And compare the dark, cratered surface of the Moon to the blue oceans and swirling clouds on our own planet. If there's a starker illustration of our lifegiving world, I've yet to see it.
The foreground is dominated by the dark, heavily cratered lunar surface. In the distance, a crescent Earth, setting. Behind, the black of deep space.

None of Orientale's rings are the initial crater itself, which would fall somewhere between the two innermost rings. The initial transient crater formed by the impact would have been obliterated by subsequent deformation, which would have included extensive rebounding of material inside the crater.
