Belated congratulations to Dr. juliamorphology.bsky.social, an assistant professor at Virginia Tech, for receiving our IGER Award last year! We asked her about her views on d/Disability and accessibility in geoscience, as well as her biggest goals for the community. Scroll to read her thoughts!
A woman with long, black hair wearing a multicolor plaid blouse. She is holding a black and wood award plaque and smiling at the camera.Graphic with a picture of Julia standing in front of a tree. Text reads:

Question - What does d/Disability and/or accessibility in the geosciences mean to you?
Quote - Accessibility means lowering the barriers for engagement and participation for all people to ensure equitable experiences for everyone. In geosciences, this means considering who is a part of the conversation; who is participating; who is learning; who is teaching and who is not. Centering the folks who are not in that group allows us to identify barriers, find solutions to improve accessibility, and ensure positive experiences for everyone. Field specific efforts include expanding our idea of who a Geoscientist is and the diversity of ways someone can engage with geoscience topics and tools.Graphic with a picture of Julia teaching a group of students at a roadcut. Text reads:

Question - What is your biggest hope for the geoscience community?
Quote - My biggest hope is that the future generation is empowered to fully show up as themselves knowing they will be welcomed, supported and encouraged to thrive in geosciences. I hope the community continues to encourage each other to question the environments they are a part of and whether they are accessible. I hope inclusive and accessible practices are commonplace and built into the culture of our communities.Graphic with a picture of Julia teaching a single student in front of a roadcut. Text reads:

Question - Is there anything else that you’d like to share?
Quote - I want to say thank you to IAGD for the award and to my colleagues and champions for nominating me. I feel very honored to receive the IGER award and am proud that it is my first award as an Assistant Professor. I think the IGER award exemplifies everything that I hope to be and accomplish as a professor, and I am grateful for the recognition and indication that I am on the right track.

The IAGD has been pivotal to my own journey. Hearing the lived experiences of our members reminds me that we are not alone and that we can be successful in this field. The mentorships and friendships I’ve found here have shaped how I think about teaching, research, and building truly inclusive spaces.

The IAGD embodies the idea that being a geoscientist has nothing to do with how many d/Disabled people are in a room or what their disability is. The IAGD gives us a home, a community, and people who are friends and colleagues for life.
